Pets on Aeroplanes?

It has always been a source of amusement for me when travelling through parts of the USA to see pets wandering through airports with their owners and on planes. It always reminded me of the movie "Men in Black". 

The practice has never been permitted in Australia until now when Virgin Airlines Oz overnight signalled it's intention to commence allowing pets on aircraft cabins albeit with necessary restrictions. 

Now I don't have an outright objection except for the fact that if I come within 2 metres of a cat I am in need of a Epi Pen quick smart 

For members who travel and come across pets on planes extensively, have you noticed any issues or is this simply a natural evolution of travel?

I plan to take my dog with me to Vegas for the first time in the coming months as more resorts allow pet stays.

Here’s a post I saw on the Maui Reddit page just yesterday.....hope they get to take the little feller with them, can’t be any worse than a cat on a plane (or bird?)

"Unfortunately, my family has to move to Colorado this summer. We have one guinea pig and we love him so much. It doesn’t seem like any airline will take a carry-on guinea pig when I call the customer service numbers they have online (only cats, dogs, and birds). We can’t put him in the cargo because it’ll be horribly hot and uncomfortable for a sensitive animal.

I’m curious if anyone who works at OGG has any insight about work-arounds. Sometimes the perk of living here is “ehh it’s fine with me”. Can I show up with him in a carrier ready to go (maybe months ahead of time), and show a manager that it could be ok?

I was just at Park MGM last week, and though I didn’t actually see any pets, I believe I did read that they were allowed there.

I’ll bet they’ve had prior issues with rodents that get lost in the plane somewhere if they get loose. Cute little guy though.

I know my last trip to Vegas, I could have used an emotional support animal.

Flamingo and Bellegio allow pets as well.

I really hope the rest do not follow suit on this. We already have enough animals on planes here. 🦧🦍

Just another example of the decline of society with the mindset that you should be allowed to take your dog just about anywhere. Dog barking in the room? Screw you on either side of my room. Maid has to clean up faeces and urine? What's the big deal? Don't want to look at a dog in a restaurant as you are sipping your '89 Petrus. Take a hike pal...I'm entitled cause I might get nervous and Rover here helps out.

ALL MGM properties allow pets I believe actually.

It has improved since US airlines are no longer required to carry "emotional support animals." Only canine service animals must be permitted. Now that the airlines can set their own policies, the days of puffins, porcupines and peacocks are essentially over.

These days, you're much more likely to get bit by a fellow passenger than an animal.  👍🏻

Now that's not fair. I would rather have a pet sitting next to me than a crying baby. Are you sure that they don't allow pets in US airlines? What if the owner of the pet is moving to another country by air? Should the owner get rid of the pet for the sake of the civilized airline passengers? Hmmm.

No not at all. There are ways to take pets and animals overseas. Just not in the cabin.

Have you encountered such experience where your stay at a hotel was ruined due to the presence of a dog staying next to your room? Most places don't allow dogs inside where people are eating anyway. I think we should be more open minded as cigar lovers. Let pets travel with their owners 😀

To a point VMan. 

Designated seats, back of the aircraft. I don't want to see them, I don't want to interact. Charge them more and cheapen the seats for those around them. I am sure there is a compromise.

I have seen dogs in the cabin 3 times while I was travelling and they didn't cause any disturbance.

I can put on my head/noise cancelling Bose for the baby. Long haul flight with a cat even beneath the seat next to me would have me in physical distress. Seriously. 

I would change airlines if that was policy. Happy to do so but let me know up front.

Fair game. If you are allergic to dogs or cats. 

I believe all US airlines allow pets under 20 lbs to board in the cabin unless the law really changed recently.  All Vegas casinos on the strip allow dogs ( you pay extra). If one doesn't want to see pets book off strip or downtown - Fremont Street in Vegas.

Streets are fine! I can walk past. Hell I am a dog lover and will pet them (owner permission).

On a plane however, Airlines need to be upfront. Ticketing should allow a no animal (nominate! Dog or cat) next to you.

In 2021, the Air Carrier Access Act (ACAA) clarified that airlines were only required to recognize dogs as service animals and accept them for transport on flights to, within and from the United States.  Animal species other than dogs, emotional support animals, comfort animals, companionship animals, and service animals in training are not service animals.  Individual airlines CAN transport other species for passengers...if they choose to.  

This change is why you no longer see comfort turkeys in the cabin the day before Thanksgiving.

By nature I am inclined to agree with the concept that too many pets on an airplane is annoying. However, I travel with our dog at Christmas as we head to FL for a couple weeks. This year I drove down with him and flew back. When we fly with him it’s bulkhead, first class, both seats. He’s sedated and well behaved. It’s still quite stressful traveling with an animal as any delay in itinerary can become a nightmare.

I am curious to know what happens in the plane if a dog starts barking and has an episode in mid air.
