El Presidente Posted June 14, 2022 Posted June 14, 2022 i love the detail that went into traditional "cigar boxes". Iron Arts Denmark patinated bronze cigar box, 20th century. Box in the form of a chest with a relief war image to the front, interior of lid recounting the battle of Lyndanisse on June 15 1219 in Danish and English. Wood lining. Back marked Copenhagen Denmark. The Battle of Lyndanisse (also spelled the Battle of Lindanise) was a battle during the Livonian Crusade, fought by the Kingdom of Denmark and German allies against pagan Estonian tribes. The battle helped King Valdemar II of Denmark establish the territory of Danish Estonia during the Northern Crusades, which were undertaken in response to calls from the Pope. The Danes defeated the Estonians at Lindanise 3
Jack Posted June 14, 2022 Posted June 14, 2022 On ebay the description would be: "Original 13th century funerary urn. Once held the ashes of a Danish king. Original inscriptions are in an ancient, lost, tongue. Guaranteed authentic." 2
Ites Posted June 15, 2022 Posted June 15, 2022 The story in the lid is basically the origin story for the modern day Danish flag. According to legend the current flag of Denmark (Dannebrog) fell from the sky during or around the time of battle and a voice was heard saying that when the flag was raised the Danes would win. Let's just say they still stick to this story 🤣 3
BrightonCorgi Posted June 15, 2022 Posted June 15, 2022 Is that for cigars or the arc of the covenant?
