MoeFOH Posted May 30, 2022 Posted May 30, 2022 MoeFOH's Album of the Week 🎶 Same as the movie thread, each week we're going to spotlight an album... be it a classic, new release, hidden gem, or outright turd... and open it for discussion: i.e. post up your favourite tracks, clips, lyrics, experiences if you saw live, etc... or dive deeper and give us a critique on why you think it's great, overrated, or a complete train wreck... And finally score it for us...  All contributors go into a monthly prize draw for a 3-cigar sampler! PM me with suggestions if there's an album you want to nominate for next week's discussion.  Week #11: Purple Rain Wikipedia says: "Purple Rain is the sixth studio album by American recording artist Prince, released on June 25, 1984, by Warner Bros. Records and the soundtrack to the 1984 film of the same name. Purple Rain was musically denser than Prince's previous albums, emphasizing full band performances, and multiple layers of guitars, keyboards, electronic synthesizer effects, drum machines, and other instruments. Much of the album had a grandiose, synthesized, and psychedelic sheen to the production and performances. The music on Purple Rain is generally regarded as the most pop-oriented of Prince's career, though a number of elements point towards the more experimental records Prince would release after Purple Rain." For me, there's a lot of nostalgia tied up in this album. My sister, who is 8 years older than me, introduced me to a lot of music and she was a big fan. My appreciation for the little maestro only grew over time. Recently revisiting this album I have to say there's definitely an element of it feeling out of date a little. That said, there's still so much to love, and there's also tracks way ahead of their time. I still thoroughly enjoy and rate the album highly - and Prince still sits in the genius musician category for me. Over to you... Who's a fan? How highly do you rate this album? Thoughts, memories, experiences, favourite tracks...? Post em up! Score it out of 10!
MoeFOH Posted May 30, 2022 Author Posted May 30, 2022 The Seinfeld "Puffy Shirt" episode comes to mind watching the clip. 1
Nevrknow Posted May 30, 2022 Posted May 30, 2022 1 or 2 songs on it I could listen to. But in all honesty, the ladies liked it, so by default, I liked it too. 😎 2
Ford2112 Posted May 30, 2022 Posted May 30, 2022 I am a fan. Prince rips on the guitar , The Beautiful Ones is a great song. PLus,who doesn't want to picture Wendy and Lisa in a bathtub together. Mega hit album, I put 1999 a nit higher, personal preference, Solid 9/10 " Dearly beloved..." 1
Paladin865 Posted May 30, 2022 Posted May 30, 2022 This album in my opinion, was Prince's opus. A well produced list of songs top by Purple Rain and When Doves Cry. Every element was connected and meshed well. This Album is an incredible example of music in the 1980's. A definite 10 2
BurstReynolds Posted June 3, 2022 Posted June 3, 2022 Easy 10/10 for me. Stone cold bangers start to finish. Everything- the energy, the emotion, the cool- is cranked up to 11. And it’s delivered just perfectly with conviction and talent and vision and style. Pop music at its absolute best. 1
Chibearsv Posted June 3, 2022 Posted June 3, 2022 Nope, this one doesn't do it for me. In fact, I avoided Prince entirely because of how little I liked this album and all the spinoff bands and music and movies that came from it. I applaud his business sense; this album created its own genre, it just isn't for me. I saw a clip of him playing at the RRHoF and he definitely knew how to rip on the guitar.  My wife loves him and has been up to see his home and studio in Minnesota with her girlfriends. She tried to get me more interested in the music by taking us up to Summerfest (Milwaukee), where a Prince knockoff band was playing...I'll never get the image of the Prince wannabee, in assless chaps out of my head, it's nightmare stuff. Puros Y Vino Posted June 3, 2022 Posted June 3, 2022 I'm more a fan of Prince as a musician than I am of his music. I do like a lot of tracks on this album. What stands out to me is how great a guitar player he is! I had no idea he was that good. He was definitely a monster talent. With that said, I find myself listening to live bootlegs of his performances as he tends to show off his guitar work more on the stage than in the studio. Nonetheless, this is a 7/10 album for me. 2

JC67 Posted June 3, 2022 Posted June 3, 2022 this album in my opinion marked the beginning of the end for Prince... i loved his funky Moog synth sounds of the albums prior to this release. He ended up as an artist i could no longer listen to.. Purple rain is a great song though.
SmokyFontaine Posted June 5, 2022 Posted June 5, 2022 An absolute legend. He played most of the instruments on it if I'm not mistaken. What a talent.Â
