Popular Post Lfhard
So after looking for a new humidor cabinet and not happy with what I’ve found either long waits, no responses, not what I'm looking for, etc. I’ve decided to build my own humidor. Im no professional but figured it would be fun and I would be able to make it the way I want without having to wait 18 months nor pay $6k for it. So here are some pics of the process so far. I used 3/4 inch red oak plywood for the frame. I bought the cooling kit from Bob at Aristocrat, so made the hole in the back for the cooling fans. I’m insulating it with 1.5” foam board. Just ordered 1/4” Spanish cedar to line the humidor, should get that by next Friday. I will post some more pics as I progress with it.

MattxG
Very nice! I'm excited to see how your project turns out! About how much do you think the project will end up costing you?

The two big ticket items was the cooling and humidifying kit from Bob, and the Spanish cedar.

I can't really find my "perfect" humidor commercially available, so it seems like I'll have to build my own eventually.
Popular Post Lfhard
So some updated pics. It took a little over two weeks to get my Spanish cedar in. I ordered it from a local supplier. The only thing was the longest plank they had was 36” the inside of my humidor is 37” so I’ll have to cut 1” pieces for the missing space as you will see in the pic. I tried to look for just one big sheet of Spanish cedar but they wanted an arm and leg for shipping so this was the best alternative. I added the trim to the top as well. Just need to finish the Spanish cedar lining sand it all down, and clean it up. I also bought some LED lights with a door switch that will turn them on and off automatically that will need to be installed as well. Then drawers and finishing. Getting there just a timing process especially when I really only work on it on the weekends.
Popular Post Lfhard
Just an update. Finished lining the interior with Spanish cedar. Then I wanted to put lighting inside so I don’t have to use the flashlight on my phone so I installed LED lighting with a door switch. Light will turn on when the door opens and off when it closes. I wanted a dark finish on my humidor, and after trying a few different stains and coats I decided to just epoxy it. The epoxy has a metallic look when it’s in the light. The sides will be solid black and the top and doors will have the gold design I put in there. Sorry for the reflection this thing is like glass. Never used epoxy but figured what the hell. The few things I have left are touching up som spots of the epoxy, adding shelves, installing the cooling and humidifying kit, and putting the doors on. Almost to being able to season it. Like I said I’m no professional but it’s good enough for me and my stash for now.

stephenbj
Looks nice! Good job! @Lfhard got a question for you. I currently own two aritocrat humidor cabinet/end table. Been using Bob’s products for over 25 years now and they are super solid. But unfortunately he decided to close shop so I can’t buy another one to match my current cabinet. You mentioned that you have been looking around for cigar cabinets, I am wondering if you can share some of the cabinet makers here with me. Although I am running out of space, but don’t mind the wait if the quality of the cabinet is good. Thanks in advance for sharing.

I found more but they were over seas and didn’t want to pay an arm and leg for shipping. American cigar cabinets https://www.amcigcab.com This place had the best communication and were willing to insulate for me and cut a hole in the back for Bobs cooling system. This was the place I would have went with. Vigilant https://vigilantinc.com/galleries/custom-humidors-gallery.php Good communication from them as well, this place was more on the expensive side. They were still willing to make some stuff custom for me as well but was expensive to add. Avallo http://www.avallohumidors.com I sent an email back in September 2021 then again in November 2021. I still h e yet to receive a response haha. There was one more place I do not remember the website, the location was in like Kansas or Tennessee or something like that. The guy was very short wouldn’t answer some of my questions and made me feel like an inconvenience. So opted to not even bother. Seems like I found more options across seas. So if your wanting to pay those shipping fees that opens up more options.
stephenbj
Thanks for the info!!! Very useful. I sent avallo a message still waiting for them to get back to me, maybe will call them next week to see. In terms of overseas makers, I actually don’t mind the extra shipping if it’s worth the extra money. I will check out the other sites and see if I like any of them, but thanks again for the info. Will report back if I decide on where to buy. Have a great weekend.
Popular Post Lfhard
Ok so here’s an update on the humidor. Has taken me a while to finish had to order some solid Spanish Cedar planks for the drawers and did a second coat of epoxy on all sides. So have to add a 1 more drawer for boxes and then a singles drawer at the top. Just about done. Have some minor things that need to corrected but is basically done. I have started to season it slowly and it is good the temp and humidity like a champ.
PrairieSmoke
Awesome project. I initially wanted to make my own, but had to be honest with myself. Hope this gives you great satisfaction, it has been fun to watch from afar.
Lfhard
@PrairieSmoke It has been fun building it, and I’m very happy with it as well. I am no professional it was kind of scary at first but once I started working on it I got enjoyment and fun out of it. My 8 year old son was also building stuff with my scrap wood. So I got enjoyment just helping him build stuff too. First time building something like this figured I had to just jump in and do it. Glad I did. Now to fill it up with more cigar boxes.
