I was listening to one of my favorite cold-weather tunes that always makes me feel like I'm on a patio in the late-afternoon sun and got to thinking about (music) samples. I've found most uses are for an artist/producer to make a quick buck, but they can also be used as an homage to the original.

What is your favorite song that used a sample or was used for a sample?

My number one for the use of a sample would be 'Armada Latina' from Cypress Hill. It effectively uses Crosby, Stills, and Nash's 'Suite: Judy Blue Eyes'. The song is also a collab of Latin music stars Cypress Hill and both Marc Anthony (whose poweful vocals are used in contrast to the original which was more subdued) and Pitbull who just seems to work with the flow. The video also features Stephen Stills - the writer of the original- which I view as an endorsement of the song.

Number one sampled song would have to be 'Think' by Lyn Collins who is backed-up by the great James Brown. A fantastic tune in its own right and I'm not sure I can think of anything that has been used more.

So, what say you?

Cheers!

Another big one:

Clyde is an absolute legend. I can't say for sure if it was stolen,  but the man deserves some serious love from those who used his sound. Love that he said Melissa Etheridge was 'the only one' to show him any appreciation.

Cheers!

Another "How can you pick just one?" :)

One go to is Beastie Boys spin on Jimmy Smith's "Root Down (And Get it)"

Beasties had some great influences between that and Motorhead. That combined with their lyrical dynamics makes for a truly amazing group.

Cheers!

I hadn't heard that story before! Like you said Clyde is the man, his sound is all over hip hop but he got nothing from it. Anything that did get credited the royalties went to James Brown.
