The presentation took place last Saturday, December 4^th, online.  Guests were able to gain and taste first-hand knowledge of the new Juan López Selección Especial Habano, and win exclusive prizes, including the first regional edition of the Juan López brand launched in Benelux, more than a decade ago.

This new product is presented in a special case which contains 25 Habanos made "Totalmente a Mano con Tripa Larga"- Totally Handmade with Long Filler-, after a careful selection of leaves coming from the Vuelta Abajo* region, the land where is considered the world's best tobacco is grown.

This new vitola commemorates the 150^th anniversary of the Juan López brand and the 30^th anniversary of La Casa del Habano franchise network, marked by the excellence of its services and the prestige of its products. The Juan Lopez Selección Especial, with a straight shape and medium-to- full strength format, will be exclusively commercialized at the network of specialized stores of La Casa del Habano.

Juan López is a brand created in the 1870's. Juan López Selección Especial has been made "Totalmente a Mano con Tripa Larga"- Totally Handmade with Long Filler – with wrapper, filler and binder leaves coming from the Vuelta Abajo* zone, in the region of Pinar del Río*, Cuba*, and made by expert Cuban cigar rollers.

I'm keen to try it. Sounds like this cigar has a few - but not all - of the qualities I look for in a daily driver:

Character, great versatility, beautiful, perfect, evoking aromas, accents, hidden and later revealed flavors, complexity, subtle notes, great balance, even burning, flawless draw, perfect puff, neither too large nor too small, ash that evolves, very compact, characteristic gray of the Vuelta Abajo soil, more than an hour of pure pleasure, magnificence, and pairs very well with Rums aged at least 15 years or with 18-year-old Whiskies.

I love how they are doing nice presentation boxes with the LCDH, and Limitida lines. Its good to see that at least with some more money they are investing it to the boxes

Zero interest in this. Did anyone read the comments about the JL from the CEO of Dominque London on Cigar Aficionado? He said it was "very flowery in the beginning." Do you know what that means? All these Cubans that are flowery perfume bombs...and there are a lot...are made of the generic Habanos blend. The basic liga has become two parts perfumey volado, one part mediocre seco, a perfumey volado binder and a half leaf of ligero for anything over 50...when the rollers actually have the ligero to roll. 

 

That's the current basic "Habanos" recipe, and it's a problem. A bit of floral character is fine, but I can't tell you how many Monty Petit No. 2's, Cohibas and even Ramon Allones cigars have come in as soapy, floral perfume bombs. The generic blends used to lean earthy, and I had no problem with that because aging can unlock cocoa and coffee from youthful earth. Now, they are intensely floral and stay that way, regardless of rest time or age, and it's very off-putting. For this reason, we're forced to shop factory, not brand, if we want anything that resembles a good Cuban cigar. I'm sure at least some of you here have noticed this. 

 

Anyway, this casa exclusive is a hard pass for me.
