apparently my machine has gone from windows 10 to windows 11. not sure if that will assist civilisation or not but it has stuffed up my 'search' capacity. i'm sure whoever make the new systems think they are incredibly clever, and in comparison to the rest of the geeks locked in the same basement, they probably are. but why fiddle with this? why stuff it up? this is in the emails section. in the word section, the search/find things still seem to work (no doubt they'll get around to stuffing those up in version 12).

does anyone have a clue how the new search thingee, which looks remarkably like the old search thingee except for one thing - the old one worked - can be made to search? not much point in having it otherwise.

any thoughts most gratefully received (and if the self-proclaimed genius who came up with this happens to be a member of FoH, go and hang your head in shame). i suspect you will have gathered that any instructions will need to be very simple. but will be much appreciated.

Did it just install, like within the past few hours/minutes up to a day? Might take a minute for the search to remap all the files. Is this the search bar on the taskbar/start menu or one in emails? But to search you click the middle of the task bar or from the top of the start menu.

i think it was sunday (perhaps yesterday). amazingly everything else seems to be working (i'm sure that won't last).

you are talking the rectangular space at the top into which one puts the word one wishes to search? that is what i have been trying. even if i search a word in an email which i can clearly see is there, it tells me there are no results. normally i would assume that this is 100% my fault but this time i did nothing and it just happened.

Depending on the email programs and the version they often have two search boxes one of which is useless (filters the selected messages or some other random feature) and one of which works the way you want.

This shows the search bar for the whole os:

If you are just trying to find a word in an email you can always press ctrl "+" F . don't include the plus but press them at the same time

If you are not talking about either of these things please post screen shot with example

the ctrl and F thing only seems to set me up to send a return email?

i am embarrassed to say that i have not the slightest idea how to do a screen shot.

I can't say I have much experience with the mail app. Try the first step at least of this video:

Oh ok. I have that on my computer at home. Out right now. I'm sure this will be resolved shortly but worst case I can check when I get home.

my back up plan is that a friend in the wine industry is based not too far away and she is dropping around for a champers later this week. i have told her that she will be attaching the printer. we might have to add this.

Did you willingly upgrade to windows 11? How does that happen automatically ?

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

i suspect the answer to that is that i pressed whatever upgrade (and i use that term loosely) i was told to. i have always been a trusting soul.

I don’t think Widows 11 will work on a Commodor 64.
You will have to upgrade to the 65.

see, this is another person who thinks he is speaking english. i have no idea what this means. but grateful for your attempted assistance. i think.

a huge, huge thank you to Bijan. what a hero you are.

our friend just spent about six hours on zoom with me fixing this (although to him, i suspect it felt like three days). i can tell you, they have just put me on blood pressure medicine. computers are not made to assist one's blood pressure. we went up and down places i had no idea existed. i felt like alice down the rabbit hole. wasn't sure i'd ever get out.

very grateful.

i think Bijan is currently moving countries and changing name, appearance, anything, so i won't be able to track him down again. but when his travels bring him here, there will be champers waiting.

Hail Saint Bijan!

I have seen Ken break computer tech guru's by the score. One even moved states (purportedly) and another intentionally gave him a wrong contact number.

Saint Bijan, you could now be called up by Gates himself to lead the microsoft AI team and nothing.....NOTHING will be as hard as what you did this afternoon.

We are in awe oh great one

i am certainly in awe.

if you join billy gates, tell him it is not a crime to make things simple.

and i would point out that the bloke who moved interstate did so because he got an offer of a great job. the one who gave the wrong number did that by accident and trust me, that was the height of his powers. he did my stuff for a couple of years. never charged me a cent. i was robbed!

Just a quick note of possible assistance for you.  Update = yes....Upgrade = NO

You will save yourself future headaches if you remember this rule.  Upgrades should only be made under the supervision of a guru.
