The golden era of home computing!

Fuzz, do you remember these? I was unfortunate to have both. The poor man's C64. :spotlight:

Good ol' Dick Smith. Based on the computer experience, I never did try his vegemite.

Phew. Glad it's sorted. I only come to these threads for the comments.

Could be worse though! Android 12 upgrade has infuriated people! 😁

This is my clock now! 🤬

Based on your pic, I would say the first thing to do is stop living in the past....

I do indeed.

Good thing you didn't try his version of Vegemite. I remember that tosser landing his helicopter in the office parking lot. Everyone had to move their cars just because he wanted to fly in.

Now that is much better. Should of called his spread mighty dicks. I can assure you he didn't make his millions selling matches. That particular line  was a massive flop.

Apple guy here but have outlook. It's always outlook. Drives me nuts. Interestingly, my Mac guy basically told me he didn't want to upgrade my computer to anything past High Sierra because the operating systems above that are a mess. And yes, the computer often puts messages up saying time to upgrade to... I'll ignore for now until I need a new machine. Glad you got it sorted Ken. Bloody frustrating.

i remember probably more than three decades ago when working in the city in brizzy, i'd bought something from one of the DS stores. it needed something else that went with it - i cannot recall what the products were - which was about $5 or $10. all good but when i got home, the small additional thing - no idea what it was, sorry - didn't work. okay, it happens. went back the next day to get it replaced. seriously it was no more than  $10, whatever it was.

an older salesman was there and there was no discussion. i was told tough luck, i could buy another one. i explained that perhaps he did not understand. i'd bought it yesterday and that it did not work and i wanted to replace it. i was basically told buy another one or f off.

some days you just get lucky.

i planted myself at the head of the queue, made it clear i was going nowhere, raised my voice about 30 decibels and proceeded to explain why he and everyone in the store up to the weasel owner were conmen, that there was no after sales service, that they simply didn't care and that if you were buying something, make sure it worked because they would not replace. and a lot more. this tosser decided the best thing was to raise his voice and argue and abuse. until he realised we'd emptied his store and that anyone entering lasted about four seconds. and that i really was not going anywhere.

i got a gobful of abuse, my ten bucks back and instructions never to return - i pointed out that really was never likely to happen (in the spirit of conciliation, i did blow him a kiss as i left but that seemed to just make him madder - perhaps he was on commission and saw $0.70 walking out the door). never been back into one of his stores (do they still exist?) and never bought a single DS product ever again.

imbecile. if he had simply swapped the product as he should have (probably cost them about $1.50) then i would not remember this and i'd probably still be a customer.

Dick Smith was sold off by Woolworths back in 2012 to a private equity company, after around 30 years of ownership.

They were a basket case for quite some time, with extremely outdated buying practices and supply chain agreements. Improvements in technology were moving faster than the stores ability to move stock (eg TVs). Foolishly, WW thought they could revitalise Dick Smith Electronics with the Powerhouse branding of some large format stores. The plan would have worked... if they had actually updated all the practices. For a while, the stores were profitable, but then they lost focus, adding all manner of products until they started looking like an Op-Shop. All the Tandy Electronics stores were either shut or converted over in 2009 to the new Dick Smith Technology stores (Powerhouse and older DSE stores were also rebranded).

They just couldn't compete with JB Hi-Fi, who worked on a much leaner and efficient supply chain. By the time WW sold off DST, and after 3 years being listed on the ASX, the share price had fallen by more than 80% under a massive scandal involving the CEO. DSE went into administration, and creditors were expected to lose somewhere around AUD300mil. The CEO had a lot of dodgy practices and fudged the financials. I remember one of the cons was buying up stock, then when it didn't sell, returning it back to the vendor... but recording the return as a sale. This falsely inflated the company's sales on the books.

Kogan bought the remnants, IP and branding for use as an online platform in Aus/NZ, which is still around today.

WRT updating and upgrading software. Not doing so leaves you more than likely, with security vulnerabilities. If your device is connected to the internet this is more of a concern.

The problem these days it's not just your computer that could be an issue if not upgraded. But your TV, power meter, car, fish tank, hygrometer.
