Coalition staffer sacked for alleged sex act on female MP’s desk was longtime Liberal aide

The Coalition staffer sacked for allegedly masturbating over a female MP’s desk was a longtime Liberal aide who had worked on numerous committees and had input into combatting sexual harassment in parliament.

Guardian Australia understands the now dismissed aide had been employed off and on for more than a decade and was no stranger to the senior levels of the Coalition.

In his time he worked for senior figures responsible for the management of the House of Representatives in both government and opposition.

The revelation of the masturbation incident occurred as the government struggles to manage the fallout over its handling of Brittany Higgins’ rape allegation and an accusation of sexual assault against attorney general, Christian Porter, which he denies.

Channel Ten reported allegations on Monday night that a group of at least four Coalition men shared images and videos of sex acts via Facebook Messenger over a two-year period ending last year. The allegations were based on the account of a whistleblower who admitted to some of the alleged conduct he was detailing on the condition of anonymity.

The masturbation incident has been condemned by Scott Morrison, the minister for women, Marise Payne, and the finance minister, Simon Birmingham.

But on Tuesday the assistant minister for children and families, Michelle Landry, defended the staffer, telling reporters that although she was “absolutely horrified” by the behaviour she feels “bad for him about this” because he was a “really good worker” who “loved the place [parliament]”.

Labor’s deputy Senate leader, Kristina Keneally, was incredulous when she learned Landry “said she feel bad for him because he loved working here”.

I find it odd that often these advocates and people that lecture others about vulgarity, sex offense, bullying, shovinism and dare I say racism, are often guilty of the transgression that they advocate against. Think maybe guilty concience or something that they are trying to atone for. Regardless the cause, I find it disturbing.

With the lunacy that I see in my own country, I cannot possibly broaden my bandwidth to include the lunacy in other countries.... -LOL

I am old and married. My wife and often talk about what it must be like to try and meet someone of the opposite sex these days. Date a coworker... go to jail.

I’m pretty sure wanking on someone’s desk was always illegal/offensive 😂, but your point very valid, we are a culture of drama queens.  Damned if we do damned if we don’t.

Its ridiculous these days. I didn't get married unitl 45 to an awesome woman with old fashion qualities which is harder to come by. But the dating field with all the feminism ideology that they "Don't need a man but want one." is everywhere. It's no wonder why the divorce rate is so high and the marrage rate has gone so low. All the beta males out there and mean ass females is something to behold.

If I was in my 20's there is no way I would get married. Courts are stacked against men in every way and shape. I've now seen cases where Prenup is insufficient and check this out, wasn't even married to her. https://www.lawenforcementtoday.com/businessman-ordered-to-pay-spousal-support-to-his-ex-girlfriend/#:~:text=TORONTO%2C CA –A wealthy businessman, married and never lived together.

A consent app is getting kickback but what do people expect when mens lives are destroyed by false accusations with no way to defend against it. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-australia-56438560

Hookers, thats what the world is going to prostitution. The risk/cosequences is becoming, in my opnion, less than dating it seems.

I don't know when things supposedly got so bad. When I met my wife I was a graduate teaching assistant and she was an undergraduate taking a class I was working in (this was in 2007). By the sounds of this thread I should be in jail or at least a registered sex offender.

I'm sure there are plenty of other members who have met their spouse at work in the past 10-15 years and are doing ok. Dating is terrible these days for a lot of unrelated reasons but the issue of consent doesn't seem to me to be a big factor.

Gonna have to get rid of most of Disney and Warner Bros cartoons. I mean just look at the following examples; Daffy is being targeted and triggered because he is a "black" duck, Buggs has sexually assaulted Elmer Fudd on numerous occasions, every Disney Duck is a flasher who wears only shirts with no pants, Brain obviously bullies and takes advantage of his mentally challenged companion Pinky, Scrooge McDuck is definitely one of the 1%, Peter Pan abducts children, Lady and the Tramp is obviously racist against Russians, Mexicans and Asians, the list just keeps going on!!

Or we could all just grow up a little and realise that these were a product of their time, and that there are bigger fights to fight.

My question is, why fight at all?

How about we all get a little thicker skin, celebrate our differences, and be willing to laugh at our various cultural heritages. No culture is without its flaws. Who cares? That is the spice of life.

I fear that the “product of our time” will be a very bland, and in reality, a distorted view of who we really are as a society.

Furthermore, I believe it is quite naive to overlay our current cultural norms over the past. While we are bent out of shape judging our ancestors according to our own self-righteousness, I suspect that they would be horrified to see the lazy, incompetent bunch narcissists that we are.

This applies in both directions and probably for all of history.

The first monotheists were shocked by the pagans and their idols and wanted to wipe them from the history books. And every successive change in public morality has had people thinking the people from the previous or the next generation were depraved or backwards.
