Punch Punch 48 – Seppelt Show Reserve Sparkling Shiraz 2008.

Right, I have no idea where this one came from, the Punch Punch 48. I suspect that it was leftover from a video Rob and I did a few years ago. Anyway, it seemed like a good thing to try with a style that I think works way better with cigars than ‘straight’ red wines.

Grand corona sized – ring gauge of 48 (no surprise there) X 140mm. Has the secondary band – the first to receive it, I believe – as a Habanos Specialist release. It certainly was in superb condition when I came to it. Looked a joy. Opened with lovely caramel notes. Good power here. Some woody notes. And then with a hint of chocolate emerging. The flavours were excellent throughout. Unfortunately, the burn raced... continue to full article.

Great read. I’m surprised you didn’t get any Peanut notes. I actually just finished one and I alway get more peanut from the 48 than maybe any other cigar.

Interesting review Ken, thanks for back story as the only sparkling red I’ve ever had or even seen was a dry Lambrusco at a family members house.  Pretty sure it was a cheap wine and it tasted as such. “Liquid Headache” was all I could think of.  This review has me curious as I’ve never had a quality sparkling red.

Agree with LLC on the Punch 48, loads of nuts, almost too unidimensional in the one I had, but again I’ve only had one example that was gifted.  In mine construction was ok, burn was even but the draw was a touch too tight and required a couple pokes with a Perfecdraw.  At best an 87-88 for me so I have not revisited as I didn’t see anything that made me want to go back. Since you had such a different experience, I should try a couple singles and give them another go as I love the Punch Marca and really wanted to like this stick.

Love the Seppelt Show Reserve Sparkling Shiraz! It was the first sparkling red I ever had, many moons ago. Some of my other favourite sparkling reds are: Capercaillie Sparkling Chambourcin, Fox Creek The Vixen, Charles Melton NV and Peter Lehmann Black Queen.

Nice work Ken.  :2thumbs:  I smoked a Punch 48 about two weeks ago. Far better than the one I smoked over a year ago. As for the Sparkling Shiraz, I've only found a few on this side of the world and I've loved them.  Sadly, our liquor monopoly stopped carrying them due to "lack of demand"  :(  I will say, it is an excellent companion to cigars. It works to complement the cigars as well as cleanse the palate for the next puff.  That was quite the history of it as well and overall a good read.
