DeeBeezy
Just picked up a box from 2016 on the auction. I love upmann but have zero experience with the mag 46, what can I expect from this cigar specifically with 4 years on it. what is the recommend aging time? CaptainQuintero
Chocolate digestive biscuit, leather and cream for me sometimes bits of sponge cake but not as much as with the classics lines-PC, Sir Winston, no.2, Lonsdale etc Leather tends to dominate but gives way to the biscuit and cream the longer they age to my tastes. They are more full bodied than most Upmann, at 4 years I'd reckon they are hitting the sweet spot.

I'm a little simpler on the Mag 46. Straight toasted tobacco, licorice and leather. I tend to get very little if any shortbread/sponge cake that is all over the Connies and SW. As far as age, unlimited potential. 10 years is nothing for a Mag 46.
DeeBeezy
Which upmann does it most resemble? If any at all
CaptainQuintero
It's pretty solidly Upmann I think. It's just like someone turned up the bass. Fuller in body than most but not in a negative way. They are just great rich smokes. Bit like cask strength whisky compared to 40% etc They're most similar to the Amatistas/Gran Corona to me but they are gone from regular production now. Possibly the #2 could be closest now? I haven't ventured to the new big Mag releases so possibly there, although the Mag 50 is an outlier to me.

They are different from the other Upmann vitolas in body and earthiness. Mongrel seems to be the right term for the younger ones but honestly don't know what happens with age 'cause that ain't how I roll on the 46.

I'd actually put forward the Majestics or Epicures as pretty close but the licorice note seems to not be there. I think the Mag 46 is a unique blend as does the No. 2 now that the PC is gone which was pretty similar. I've never been a fan of Mag 46 or No. 2 or the PC. I love the Connies and SW and I do like the Mag 54. I always have said HU has two sides--dark and light. I prefer the light.

You saying that has made me think to those tubes offerings too, I think the Coronas Major could be a decent shout too, just not as much refinement. I think it probably reflects how wide the old catalogue was for each marca. My favourite cigar is probably the Upmann no.1 but they went the way of the dodo too. Like a Sir Winston just in a shorter format, stunning blend. RyJ is one that seems to have/had that massive spectrum of styles within its own brand. It's a little sad to see them trimmed back so much. At least RyJ does seem to have that range still

It's a little sad to see them trimmed back so much. At least RyJ does seem to have that range still I can get on board with the Coronas Major but I am always disappointed with the quality of the HU tubos. Yes, most of the old Lonsdales were absolutely top notch. HU 1, RG Lonsdales, Dip 1, SP Molinos are all classics. If you can find well-cared for examples today the floral notes that come off of them are intoxicating. I think RyJ used to have much more diversity in blends in the catalogue but now it's down to the Churchill rosewater light cherry or the Belicosos earthy, leather dark cherry. I would still nominate RyJ as the marca that has fallen the most in the 21st century in terms of quality. It was second to none for many decades and a personal favorite and now I hardly buy it. Boli would be a distant second since it was never as popular as RyJ in the 20th century.
DeeBeezy
So the 46 resembles the PC? I haven’t seen any mention of the royal robusto, it doesn’t seem to get the same recognition as the other upmanns Rate this box, how does it look? For those who know what good mag 46 should look like

For those who know what good mag 46 should look like Consensus on this site seems to be light or dark wrappers both do well with upmann. I'd say they are fine but I never really know until I dig my paws in.id say they are good because they are 46s.... The wrapper looks a bit matte, but that means little. I love these. Might be my top CG, even above Sig 4. Lovely upmann flavors but has stronger cedar and spicy notes. The upmann cinnamon nutmeg and Graham cracker is still well on display, just not the star like in a Sir Winnie. I like them with 2 years or less. It is a great mongrel that I just love.

Heartily agree with this. Personally, I haven't found that the wrapper sheen foretells the overall smoking experience on the Upmann, particularly the connie 1 and mag 46 (very different smokes btw). The Upmann's have been remarkably consistent across the board and these look damn nice to me.
Sandman
Mag 46 for me is one of the most recognizable blends from Habanos. It’s a really unique blend, and really exemplifies Upmann. They seem to age forever, and age well. Smoked a 16 the other day and loved it. Tasted like it had more age on it than 4 years. It’s a classic really. Over the years when seeing discussions on the Mag46 it seems you either love it or you don’t. Wish they still sold in 50 cabs.
Connoisseur Kim
This is my fav Corona Gorda and one of the best CCs I've ever had! Of course, it isn't same as traditional Upmanns like Connie A, but you might find similarities with Half Coronas. Congrats for getting vintage Mag 46 buddy! DeeBeezy
Thanks for all the insights guys and compliments on the box. As we all know the best way to find out it is to try one myself which I will look forward to doing, upmann is one of my favourite marcas and the mag 46 is one of the only current production upmann I am yet to try
