I'm considering snagging some cedar and taking a crack at a few desktop units, maybe cabinets after I've cut my teeth with the sealing joinery. Interested to hear others' experience

Making humidors is easy. Making a quality humidor that you are willing to place your prized possessions in is a horse of a different feather. (speaking for a friend)...

Well, yeah. I'm not going to bother trying to build something that I wouldn't be proud to use. Spanish cedar's fairly pricey, too. High $/bf to be dropping on a simple box ?

Yep. My usual build results....

I hope someone does pick up the torch. Bob's retirement was a big loss to the cigar community.

I've had my Aristocrat for about 10 years and I'm grateful to have it. I started working with Bob on a second, custom build for my motorhome, exchanging ideas, roughing out what I was looking for but it was not to be. I put it on the back burner and then, he retired.

I found a used aristocrat on Craigslist yesterday for $500. I was so giddy waiting for a response. The seller sold it last week and didn't take the ad down...

Bobs retirement has had an impact and there is clearly a gap in the humidor market. I too look everywhere to find used humidors of his but to no avail. It is like looking for a unicorn.
I would love to see someone pick up the torch. In America the need exists.

I'm building a fairly intensive shop at my new place. Will be doing my own milling and drying on site. My primary focus is to study Tage Frid and George Nakashhima's practices, and eventually build Nakashima-inspired furniture. It'll be some time before I've honed my skills to the point where I'm happy with my finished works, but only disasters happen fast.

Inspired by btwheezy's build to work toward a cabinet. Perhaps by this time next year, I may be able to start building a second one. First completed cabinet build will be a gift for a special someone.

I've made a photo album for my shop-build-process, to be continually updated as progress is made. Feel free to peruse if you're keen.

In the before time, Alain (SmokinAl) shared the production of a desktop with the forum - a true wonder. Unfortunately, with subsequent forum upgrades, the pics have been lost. But it may be worth a read nonetheless.

Thanks for posting that!

I wonder if by some off chance this is the same Alain who used to post as "cubanismo" on the old (dating myself, here) CA Forums? He and I got together once many years ago, and I'd be delighted to catch up with him.

John, this question is for you. My browser won't let me type anything else after an '@ mention'. Is there any chance the original photos from the linked thread still exist somewhere in the abyss? I tried google cache and the wayback machine, but to no avail. Cached version is beyond my googe-fu, it would appear.

I've no idea re Al on CA - but he was a mate here. To best of my recollection, Yossie won the humidor, and kindly sent it to Trevor. I know this is of no help to you, but selfishly, it brings back some fond - nay, hilarious memories to me  :)

I believe @Colt45 is correct. I've tried looking for images from old threads before and yes, I believe they're lost after forum upgrades over the years. The final authority on the matter would definitely be @MoeFOH.

Obviously I blaze my own path in the humidor world. For me, humidors are less about furniture and more about climate control performance.

This year I have vowed to prototype a larger unit based off a 140 bottle cooler. I see this as the ultimate direction of my work.

Commercially... maybe! My humidors are owned internationally. But true entrance into this world means real production capacity and not one man designing, engineering, machining, accounting, logistics, manufacturing and shipping.

Making humidors for a living would make it less a passion and more a job. There is some luxury about building humidors because you love to, verses have to...!

Cheers! -Piggy

Don't get me wrong. My primary storage device is a 72qt airtight plastic bin, lol. I used to have a ~32 bottle wine cooler, and I just stacked my boxes in there with adequate space for unobstructed airflow. I gave that unit to a family member when I moved ~5,000 miles ? I did recently come back upon my old, wee 6 bottle cooler. I might reenlist that as a 'desktop' unit for current smoking stock. Keep the "don't touch for now" backlog right where it already is.

I have no allusions of carrying the torch, myself. Was more curious to hear if anyone else was. If *I* build a cabinet or two, it'd definitely be for fun, personal use, or as a gift. I get the most 'building pleasure' from things that are conceived from the get-go as a gift.

Bummer! I appreciate the effort! Maybe Moe will help unravel the mystery! Or maybe the current owner of the unit could post the pics. I don't remember Trevor's username, or I'd '@ mention' him

When necessity drives me I build my own. The icebox humidor is a good example and it has been fantastic if smaller than required. I’ve been working on a second, larger unit. But finding the time to finish it has proven difficult. It can definitely be done however.

Bob is one of those guys who can not really be replaced.

That being said, Avallo Humidors is already making a quality product and carrying the torch so to speak.

The veneer I installed peeled away when I humidified the cabinet, so I had to strip the interior out and start over. I have a 1/8 inch maple plywood  To replace it with, but I haven’t had the time since I’ve gone back to work. It basically is to the point where I just need to line the interior, cut Spanish Cedar shelves, and it’s ready.
