I am a smoker, not a collector!

I'm not pointing my comment to you Ray, rather just piggybacking (pardon the pun).

I think what I great deal of smokers don't really get when looking at auctions, is that everything has a value, but that value is built over many different factors.

Take these two boxes.

Box 1,  Cohiba Siglo VI Gran reserva   Sold price in Dec 2019 £5050 (plus fees)

I would suggest the value of this box splits probably like this

  • The value of the cigars to smoke                                              30%
  • The value of the whole package to flip                                    60%
  • The value of the box post smoking                                           5%
  • The current value of the item as a piece of social history         3%
  • Rarity of being intact                                                                 2%

Box 2,  La Flor Jenny Lind Supreme  Sold price in Sept 2017     £800 (plus fees)

I love cigars, and especially this cigar.  And it is not like I haven’t done similarly frivolous things.  But at $1000 a cigar, I don’t know. If you told me I had to consume $1000 in 2 hours with

And from what I can tell, it seems to be two bidders thus far. Who they are is anyone's guess! Who knows? Perhaps Marvin Shanken (the publisher of Cigar Aficionado who famously paid $US575000 years ag

There are plenty of good cigars to smoke, at any price point. I would understand the angst, if the entire market was $1,000 a stick. But, this is one very rare and desirable box, for a very small subset of the cigar community. Who cares what the market decides it will sell for? If you don’t like it, vote with your wallet and smoke whatever suits your fancy.

And for all the moral guardians of the FoH community that have an average (<$250k annual household) income, you smoking a $50 cigar is more indulgent than a high net worth individual smoking a $1k stick.
