So good news, I found out I'm going to be a dad! I've wanted to be a dad for about 10 years, and my wife and I have been trying for a while.

My plan is to purchase a box of at least 20 and have one each birthday. Then on the 18th birthday share one with the kiddo if they like.

The forum search function hasn't been working for me, so sorry if this question is discussed elsewhere. My questions are:

  1. How do you determine which box or blend will age well over another? How do I shop for a 20-year stick that won't lose all it's flavor?
  2. Do you have any recommendations for something special that won't absolutely break the bank? I've heard good things about QDO and Trinidads, and of course COH, maybe Siglo?
  3. Any advice for a soon-to-be dad?

I have a NewAir CC-300 kept at a steady 65/65 for long-term aging.

Thanks!

I’d go with something special that ages well like a Cohiba. A box of 25 either Esplendidos, Coronas, Lanceros,  or Robustos.  Also try and purchase a box code of your child’s birthday. A December 20 code and maybe track down another if the dates are recent like a December 18 if they were born on December 18. Much easier to track down now. And cheaper. Trust me.

Congratulations!  Instead of a forum opinion, why not just set aside a box of your favorite "special" cigars.  One thing you'll learn about this forum is that we've all got opinions but maybe your favorite cigar is much different than my favorite cigar.  Personally, I'd put aside Sir Winston since it's one of my favorites.

Congratulations!

I would pick a box of a marca you already like smoking. If you like Montecristo, I could suggest the Especiales or the A, for H. Upmann the Sir Winston, for Cohiba the Lanceros , for Partagas the Lusitania, for Hoyo the Double Corona and Punch also the Double Corona. The last 3 come in 50 cabs which are meant to age better.

These are just some suggestions.

H. Uppmann #2 age really well and they are very reasonable in price, I have a psp box I bought last year and they should be great for long term aging.
Congratulations by the way!

Congratulations! I went through the same thought process but instead of smoking one every year I was going to crack open the box when he turned 18 but I like where you are going.

I ended up buying a few boxes but hopefully with the help of Di I may have been able to snag a regional with the box code the same month and year my son was born so that's definitely getting aged and will find out in 18 years if they were worth keeping or not.

As previously mentioned go for cigars that you enjoy but the strong bodied cigars tend to age better as the flavours mellow.  If you go for a QD I always think they are quite mellow already so 20 years down the line I'm not sure if they will still be good.

I bought a birth month/year box of Trini Coloniales and just had the first one this past March. It’s a short smoke, but now that I’ve got a kid, it seems to be the format I have time for.

1 year down, 23 more to go!

Any of the standard double coronas would be good.  If you're aging a box that long; go big!

First of all, congratulations! We welcomed our first in December 2018, he is a blast.

I kept my options open as I wanted DIC 18 box codes (his birth month), though you sound like you may just be looking for a box to age vs. the exact month. I’d say something like a Sir Winston would be ideal but it can be a challenge to source the exact month if that was the way you were going.

I got DIC 18 boxes of Dip 2s, CoRo, and HU 2s.

Advice on being a dad I would say don’t worry about it. If I can do it anyone can!

Congrats ! May god bless you with a happy and healthy child first of all. This journey will have many ups and downs and this is even before they are born....

My son is now 7 months and it is the best gift I have ever received. There will be plenty of sleepless nights and stresses you can't even imagine now...... I am sure in some time I will be ready to ring his neck but we are not there yet....When i get home from work and he smiles and makes that noise that must be him saying hi daddy when he see's me, it cannot even be put into words how it makes me feel. We are all different but if that doesn't melt your heart than I don't know what could. I will say if you are anything like me your smoking ability and timing will change quite a bit at first, and all those packages you receive at the doorstep are much better sent elsewhere or when you can snatch them without your better 1/2 seeing. Something about women's hormones, easier to not go there, I am just giving you fair warning.

As far as specific cigars there are many that work, but I agree with the above mentioned buy what you already know you like..Sometimes we think I have to have this or that and forget what we like... I have about 3 boxes of AGO 19 already and they will keep popping up, even years later so don't stress if you miss the first opportunity. I have also seen people ask for specific boxes here and seems like they have been able to receive what they wanted, it's a pretty generous place so don't worry there will be plenty. Definitely buy within the first few years b/c if you wait too long then the cost will rise a lot, but mostly don't stress it, they will all be available, if you have been waiting 10 years for this then a few months or years to find this isn't that long.

I wish you the best and all the blessings that come with a child, congrats !

How to tell what ages well?
Well it's not my wife, I'll tell ya that much! I get no respect. Scientists discovered a food that can reduce sex drive by over 50%, and cause a woman to gain weight uncontrollably. Wedding cake. No respect, I tell ya.

We had a kid recently. She lets the baby do things to her breasts that I haven't been able to do since we were dating! Hey!

Thank you. I'll be here all week. (This damn quarantine has been difficult for me. My apologies. Haa haa)
