SmokyFontaine Posted December 12, 2019 Posted December 12, 2019 Relatively new to Cubans, and not quite ready to spend the money at FOH Auctions until I feel like I better understand my tastes, so the vast majority of my cigars are 1.5yrs to 3 months old. Early on I didn't have a full appreciation for how rough those youngin's can be (nor did I appreciate the world of difference a 3 month acclimation period has vs a 2 week), but now I tend to try one out after 2-3 months of receipt, then can quickly tell if harshness will be a problem. If it is, I set them aside, and re-visit after 6 months or so. I feel like this is pretty common path here. On the flip side, PLPC, JL2, RyJ Short Churchills, Siglo I/II - those have been ROUGH young (for me). But I'll be darned if the other day I didn't have one of the best CC experiences yet with a Hoyo Petit Robusto from ABR19. Whoa. Such a unique array of flavors. High volume of smoke produced. A touch of strength, medium body, while sneaking up to medium full every once in awhile. Cigar was a bit under-packed, but the thing just made me giggle with excitement over how good it was. Do you fine folks have similar stories of cigars that you dig into young and they routinely deliver? I want to try another from the box in a week or two to make sure it wasn't just a fluke, but daaamn that first one was outstanding. I have some Epicure no2 singles resting, but now I'm very interested in diving deeper on the HdM lines. 2
SenorPerfecto Posted December 12, 2019 Posted December 12, 2019 Nice post. if you feel like sharing some hoyo pr, I’ll send you some young-ish stuff I’ve liked. FYI get yourself some GOS 17 Punch Punch. Should t cost you extra yet
99call Posted December 12, 2019 Posted December 12, 2019 Be advised by.....but do not adhere to, the rigours of other peoples regimes. Different markets historically enjoy different things i.e Spain and Cuba enjoy the fresh, vibrant character of young smokes, whereas the UK and France might stereotypically enjoy muted well aged smokes. So much emphasis goes into the cigars evolution/development etc etc...and we forget we 'the smoker' is changing, learning, and adapting. Personally I love aged cigars, but I love young vibrant schizophrenic cigars much, much more. They are like your best friends. wild, brilliant and untrustworthy young......then calm, assured and comfortable when old. both are great, but it's you that defines how enjoyable the ageing process is......not the cigar 1 2
bbguardsp Posted December 12, 2019 Posted December 12, 2019 Of all my 2019 boxes and quarter boxes ordered this year, good examples for me fresh in no particular order are - CoRo, RASCC, La Fuerza, RA Gigantes, Hoyo DC, Partagas P2, Wide Churchill, QDO 54, Edmundo, Reyes, Dip2, Rio Seco. 2019 has been batting .999 for me. So many cigars in balance right now. More age for my personal taste is needed for my Upmann 2, BBF, Vigia, HDM Epi2, QDO 50, Petit Edmundo. You could say I have a mongrel palate smoking so many young, but all the good cigars I mentioned fresh just don't show any bitter/grubby/astringent characters for me like you would expect. I've been smoking cubans on a regular basis for the past 5 years. 2019 is my favorite subjectively. Hoping 2020 continues the uptick. 2 1
Wookie Posted December 12, 2019 Posted December 12, 2019 Monte Maltes was really raspy after first inch....think these are 2018 or 2019. Got them from FOH and they are very young and need downtime, IMO. They should be good I hope. On the other hand, the Trovas I've smoked have been balanced all the way to the nub...think they are 2018. I have 1998-2000 fundys that are almost indistinguishable from 2017-2018 fundys. Go figure. I love all CCs young and old, but some really need time. 1
Popular Post MrGlass Posted December 12, 2019 Popular Post Posted December 12, 2019 I've found the H. Upmann Connossieur A to be very approachable young. 5
mwaller Posted December 12, 2019 Posted December 12, 2019 I just tried a Wide Churchill from a mid-2019 box. I was really surprised how good it was! I don't typically go for RyJ, but this made me reconsider. Tangy, creamy, and spicy in equal measure. Very nice! 1 1
dobbs Posted December 13, 2019 Posted December 13, 2019 partagas serie d no 6 has been amazing fresh. i am smoking from a rag dic 18 box right now, one was plugged, but the others have been fantastic. -dobbs 1
lovethehaze Posted December 13, 2019 Posted December 13, 2019 For me Connie 1, qdo 50, jl1 not 2, totally diff animals. Bbf have been very airy and creamy not as strong as I thought. Medio siglo, d4 again not as strong as I anticipated, party shorts, triny coloniales, Connie b if u can find them, pl picadores, punch 48, Sancho panza non plus get em while u can and most all hdm. I enjoy a stronger cigar I should mention this but all of these i would day are good after that initial 90 days. 1
UpInSmoak Posted December 13, 2019 Posted December 13, 2019 A fresh ROTT RASS is what hooked me. 24 of the others from the same box didn’t come close to the satisfaction I got from the first. Cuba does one thing really well. Getting you off the non CC train in hopes of the CC Nirvana you get from time to time 1
CampDelta369 Posted December 13, 2019 Posted December 13, 2019 Easy Peasy Fresh and Easy: QD50, Punch Punch [Not from the box @lovethehazeis pulling from ], Trinidad La Trova, RYJ Churchill all from 2019 have been very smoke-able. I even popped an Esplendidos which was delicious. Punch Punch being the mildest with QD50 right there as well with more creaminess. The La Trova was a popcorn and salted butter festival, the RYJ and Espy were very rich and earthy right now. Hammer time: Hupmann #2, MC#2, SC La Punta, Mag 46, Bolivar PC My rotation is MC#4, Party Shorts, El Principe, MC#5, Connie A, Connie #1, Bolivar BF, PLMC circa 2018 MC#2 2014, Bolivar RC 2015, Lusitania 2014. PLPC 2017 On Deck: The RASS from DIC 18 have killed my pallet so far. Probably a bad box. The opposite of smokeable. The 2019 batch does look better 1
