How cold is too cold?

Recommended Posts

Reading the “So how’s the weather” thread got me thinking. How cold is too cold for you? Is there a point where you simply won’t enjoy being outside no matter how bundled up you get or a point where you’re cigars are prone to unraveling, etc? Curious to see various opinions on the matter.

For me 38F is my Mendoza line. I can easily sit out and enjoy at that point. Under 30F I seem to be risking watching my stick unwrap itself somewhere in the final half.

I’ve smoked outside at -5C with a friend in Germany but it was more a matter of principle than enjoyment.

With a propane heater and appropriate clothing I’ll go to about 10C but that’s it.

Yes, I know I’m spoiled, living in California...

Wind and sun play a significant role in this equation. I've smoked very comfortably in single digit temperatures as long as there is no wind and the sun is shining.

I'll second that.

Also depends on the season, in the fall anything below 10C I go inside. In the spring, when it's been damn cold all winter, I will be out in the sunshine at 0C (no wind) enjoying a smoke with no jacket on. It's all about perspective.

By Hawaiian standards, it’s been a cold month even where I am at sea-level - routinely in the mid-to-high 60’s in the evenings:ph34r:. Needless to say, my limits don’t get tested here.

I did attempt to smoke a cigar outside on several occasions during a recent ski trip, wasn’t able to enjoy them at all. Some of youz are hard core, for sure.

In The Denver metro area it can be 55F and downright cold if it’s cloudy or it can be high 30sF with snow on the ground and warm if the sky is blue and the sun is high in the sky. The thinner atmosphere at 6000 feet provides a strong radiant heat. If it’s uncomfortable for me then I head to the American legion or the cigar shop. I haven’t had cigars unravel but I have had the wrappers crack.
