Partagas 8-9-8 (?)/Asahi Super Dry Beer; Grand Marnier

By Ken Gargett.

We continue the double drinks experiment. This time, I went with two utterly different drinks to see what we’d come up with.

But first, the cigar. A Partagas 8-9-8 of undetermined age, though after smoking it, I think it had a number of years under the belt, but not ancient by any means. The first time I have tried one of these in quite a few years – yes, so many cigars and so little time to smoke them all. Immediate impression is that this is all old school. A nice thin (ish) ring gauge – 43 – and Lonsdale sized. So thumbs up from the kickoff. The flavours are instantly powerful, take-no-prisoners stuff. I think Rob and I did a vid of these some 6-8 years ago. No idea what we thought. I’m going to go out on a limb and say I suspect we enjoyed it.

There is serious power here... continue to the full article here.

The 8-9-8 remains a long-time favorite; however, it is worth noting that it's pretty clear the raw horsepower to which Ken alludes has been throttled back in the last few years. Prior to maybe...2014(??) if you were planning on an 8-9-8, you were planning on a single-cigar day.  Great smoke but much less of a force of nature now.  @RDB I would not hesitate to pick up a box to try. Still medium-plus but quite approachable.

@Ken Gargett

If you're interested in Japanese lagers, I can strongly recommend Yebisu All Malt, with something like a Dip 2, and Yebisu's german style Black lager with something like a JL No 1

Yebisu in my humble opinion is the best out of the mainstream Japanese lagers.  Not readily available here in the UK (much to my annoyance) but I think Aussie should have it in most places.

In todays world of craft beers, I'm not suggesting they are super distinctive, just very pleasant refreshing flavourful lagers.

to be honest, never really thought about trying them. but we have a fantastic craft beer (and much more) store in brizzy so might check them out. it is, here's a shocker, called Craft.

perhaps you were still in shock from the appalling ingratitude shown to you by our lord and master for your kind gifts.

Ha ha... No, not at all. I don't think there was any ingratitude. Let's face it, the stuff is liquid lolly shop. Probably deserved exactly what it got. I took a punt on buying something new, and it backfired. Won't be the last time. At least Rob spared me from owning two bottles -- I got one for myself as well. That said, I actually don't mind a small dose of it with a cigar. Very small dose.

Possibly the real ingratitude was suffered by you, in that he didn't bring the other gift with him to your place--the FP Bloody Shiraz Gin. ; )

By the by, I'll be going to Broncos-Titans trial match on the weekend. Looks like that young Flegler will fill in adequately for Haas for the time being. You're right, they're stacked with forward talent coming through. Very interested to see Haas when he debuts this year. Especially as I now know he's a cockroach.

could be a good one. flegler and carrigan to fight out that spot but there are others.

here is a promising pack - i reckon the broncs have a good starting 6, plus 10 others in the mix. nice for some depth finally.

so say lodge, mccullough, joe O, gillett, haas, tevita P as the starting pack, all fit and available. then for the bench, glenn, fifta, turpin (hooker), flegler, carrigan, and then a couple of old experienced workhorses - felsom and tagliatiese, the young pom who is supposedly a star but was out all last year injured, savalio, plus patrick mago and jaydn su'A (and hasn't he bulked up in the off-season since injured - looks like another monster).

although i suspect only three on the bench and then kotoni staggs. another who has bulked up a bit and the best player on the field for the trial last week (watched it on broncs tv). so they won't use turpin. i think the bench will include fifta, staggs, glenn and su'A (or whomsoever they replace in the starting line up). but who knows.
