Popular Post CaptainQuintero
This is going back about five years now, me and the better half had been living together for nearly a year in a pokey little flat to see how things would go together living in the same place. All things were going well and we had booked to travel down to the South Coast of England and get away from it all, our first holiday together, what people usually say is the big test of a relationship, although we had been living together for a good while now so we weren't particularly concerned. I'd had the chance to pick up a special cigar at the time and decided that this would be the perfect time to pack it up and bring it with me, my first real vintage cigar a Romeo y Julieta Romeo from the 1960's. At the time it was an expensive splash out at £35, with subsequent prices rises from HSA it doesn't seem too bad looking back! A weighty perfecto coming in at 52 x 162 these hark back to a different age of smoking fashions and trends. The weight of tobacco might be very similar to the robustos extra of today, but is far easier in the mouth and has a touch of class about it that you don't find in the slab-sided chunky parejos of today. The holiday was great, we spent lots of time in an unusually hot English Summer, looking back it must have been extra special as it's a rare occasion when you can swim in the Atlantic every day for two weeks to cool off! At the end of a particularly warm day about a week in, we decided to go see the sunset and bringing the cigar along seemed a good opportunity to see how it could be. I can still remember it now funnily enough, no need to delve into the notebooks for tasting notes. Straight off the cigar blazed into life with hardly any encouragement. A dense cloud of thick coffee laden smoke engulfed me, I don't think I've experienced such a smoke cloud before or since. I was expecting the 50+ year old cigar to be a bit muted, dusty even but with interesting flavours to note. Not a chance! It was incredibly rich and vibrant still, juicy even. The first third was solidly medium body dominated by a rich core of aromatic stewed dark berry fruit, heavy fresh coffee notes and all delivered on a bed of thick cream. Perfect draw, perfect construction. It was strange to light something up that had sat in a humidor for such a long time while gigantic world events passed it by. We had gone out to see a sunset but this stick was pushing that to the back of my mind. As we clambered over styles to get to the cliffs my other half took the distractions as a chance to take the stick from me and smoked away, this was something special! The second third came along without any chance to pause and reflect on what had previously come, the fruity nature had started to change and was replaced with a distinct rose hip tang that alternated back and forth with turkish delight and blackberry jam. For the first time a herbal note came in replacing the cream, something that can be typical RyJ, but usually I find a cigar from Romeo is either a sticky jam or a herbal one, that's the two extremes of the spectrum, you don't tend get them together in one stick. The sun had really started to set now and the final third marched on just as steadily. The cream came back in a crema caffe package that wafted lazily along and allowed a dense dark fruit syrup to drift in and out. Still as soft and silky as the first puff the cigar never once became harsh or bit back. The cigar had steadily progressed to full bodied along it's journey but the strength stayed medium throughout, even to the nub. The cigar? A solid 97/100, and to be honest it could have had the full 100 if I had been sat dedicating time to the cigar instead of walking and talking. But in doing so, the experience would have suffered. Combined with the sunset, warm lazy Summer breeze and holding hands with the girl who I will be now marrying in May, it was truly 100/100
WABOOM
That is awesome. Good write up. I wish I could find 1 or 2 of those. The oldest cigar I've had was aged 17 years.
RDB
Great story and write up! I do love the way some flavour experiences stay in the mind like this. There are many wines I can still taste today decades after drinking them.
