One I used to love back when I used to drink ws Elijah Craig 12 Year. Only around $20-$25, and I thought it was excellent. Of course, I also drank a ton of Wild Turkey and Evan Williams.

$27 now and no longer 12 years. Sigh.

So weird reading the regional responses here.  Willett impossible to find here in Oregon, but other places folks saying it's plentiful.  Saw this for myself when I saw more than a dozen bottles on the shelf at the Total Wine in Sacramento last time there.

Opposite case for Sazerac here.  Someone mentioned it isn't cheap...only $33 all in here in Oregon.  And never hard to find here.  Admittedly a great bargain at that price.

Weller 12 year retails for 40 and I have never seen a bottle in person, my friend paid 150 for a bottle in Vegas just because he was tired of looking and never finding it.

Sounds like you had a disappointed friend!  Weller is the very definition of hype for me.  It's like a rare Fuente Opus - ok at MSRP, laughable at anything more.  And nice bourbon collection in your later post - Taylor's a treat.

I'm just glad that short article included the obvious, instead of my dearly beloved Willett Pot Still Reserve, Johnny Drum Pvt Stock and Eagle Rare rare bottlings.  And I will definitely second Old Grand Dad Bottled in Bond.  After slowly sipping off my most recent bottle over the last few months, I adore the buttered corn and slight caramel and vanilla coming through.  At less than $30, it's a steal.

Sazerac is nice but not cheap!

The regular Sazerac is about $30/bottle...but if you are talking about the 18Y.O., then yes, not cheap.

Old Grand Dad Bottled in Bond also comes to mind. Spicy as heck, ugly ugly bottle.. But always I keep it on hand.

There standard bottling is also a good go to at a reasonable price.

In the UK Sazerac is 55 GBP. That's approx 65usd.

Virginia and north Carolina. Both abc controlled. My brother lives in Lexington, and he hasn't found any there in the few years he's been there. That w12 price was from the va lottery, I believe it was the 1 liter bottle. That ratio of pricing is all based on msrp controlled by the state.

Yeah, 1lt w12 v 750 etl makes solid sense...Virginia is great pricing, but tough selection & fair lottery for rares. Bourbon season is emotionally difficult for many...

I would go with Buffalo Trace $45 for 1.75L, Knob Creek $50 for 1.75L, 1792 $45 for 1.75L, Larceny $38 for 1.75L, or Bulleit $39 for 1.75L. Any of those are solid bourbons for not a hefty price tag.  Knob Creek and Bulleit also do a Rye version for the same price tag. Willet is $77 for 1.75L, a little pricier but still worth it. Plus the 1.75L is the best bang for the buck.

Do you shop at Spec's or Total?

A lot of chatter about Sazerac, buy isn't it a Rye?  It is delicious though.

At the scumbag LCBO, I would constantly buy buffalo trace, 4 Roses single barrel and small batch, Eagle Rare 10 and the Weller (SR, 107 and 12) whenever they hit shelves. Not much else is to my liking or a "deal".

Evan Williams Single Barrel should be at or around $30. Over the years they have consistently put out an incredible product regardless of price point. Old Grand Dad 114 is another sub-$30 bourbon that will give you a great sipping drink without breaking the bank.

DFW resident myself. Seems like TW has the better prices on most things. To me Specs seems pricey. Goody Goody appears to be a close second to TW prices.

Which one out of those has the best selection?

Just depends on what you’re looking for. I would say TW or Goody have the best selection. However, Specs is the only, of the three, that carry Belle Meade, which I really like. Overall, I would say Specs has the fewest options of the three. TW & Goody have more to choose from.

I'm 0 for 12 in the Virginia lotteries so far. The north Carolina one closed on Friday, so hopefully I get some of the btac or other high end allocated stuff soon. A store down the road is having a grand opening soon too, and apparently they pull rare stock for those events.

It depends on which one is most convenient for me to get to, I don't have an allegiance either way. I moved to Texas in 2010 and the only liquor stores were Goody Goody, Sigel's (highest prices of all of them), Majestic (now out of business), and Big Daddy's (now out of business). Spec's opened in DFW in late December 2011 and Total Wine followed in May of 2012. To me, they both have about the same stuff, maybe a dollar here or there either way depending on what you're looking for. Spec's will carry more Texas-based whiskeys and bourbons and Total Wine carries more of a broad selection from around the country.  To me, they both have much more than the others and the prices at both Spec's and Total Wine are for the most part lower than the competition and comparable to each other. As far as sheer volume, they are the only ones with stores big enough to carry the amounts that they do. I see myself shopping at Total Wine much more in the future as one just opened last week Thursday about 5 mins from my house. Much more convenient than the closest Spec's which is about 25 mins away.

I was curious as the prices you posted are pretty rock bottom for NTX. Total runs big brands at a very low margin to bring in customers and hope they buy in on the store brands they push to make a blended margin. Spec's has a similar philosophy (Bellemeade is 'their' brand) and is fighting hard for a slice of pie. Centennial/Big Daddy/Majestic was all the same chain; Sigel's new ownership may bring a better price philosophy, or at least a annual clearance sale mentality that may resonate well...

I work for an independent wine store that lets me focus a selection more on barrel picks & esoteric, boutique, truly hard to find spirits & non catalog NC.

Getting back to thread, Mellow Corn, Evan WillIams BiB & Ancient Age need to be mentioned to have more $ on hand for 24:24!
