We were in havana and my good mate says "Hermano......they won't change my pound notes"

No problem. I had plenty of CUC and thought I would change the pound notes at the airport in Mexico.

No go.

Back home in Oz

No go.

You see, they are apparently the "old notes".

So my question for our UK brethren.  Can you easily change these in the UK?

If so, have I got a deal for someone coming to Havana in November :D

The new fifty isn't a polymer note. It was changed approx 5 years ago I think. So it really is an old old one. Are you sure it is also not fake?

I'll trade you for some old Irish notes...

In laws ran into this.  They change the notes every few years, and evidently was a big change recently.  From what I recall you have to exchange at a bank in the UK

many thanks gents.

......even you Pete and Fuzz :rotfl:

I will send them back with a UK mate in November. I suspect I will be getting some cigar jewelry in return :cigar:

You can just swap them at a post office or pay then into any bank just like any other old currency. Some things which are very old like 'white fivers' you can still pay in but you'll get more money selling as an antique etc

But it's a moot point, as far as I'm aware these are still legal tender, use at any shop/pay in at any bank etc

You don't often see £50s though, at least I don't :D

I was in the UK at the beginning of August and I had a paper tenner. No shop would take it and I had to try a couple of different banks before NatWest changed it for a plastic one. I was told that all NatWest branches will change the notes but not all of the other banks would.

I suspect a few £50 notes would get you quite nice cigar jewellery from that particular chap, knowing him!

I didn't run into this when we were there earlier this year, but then I never went with £50's, just loads of £20s/£10s.  I noticed the polymer change, not a big fan of the new notes myself.

I did however run afoul of the changes to the £1 coins, I had a few of them brought with me which are now apparently worthless......

You can only swap them at a post office for a few months during and after the change over period. After that you need to take them to the bank.

And that 50 is the old 50, not the new 50. And the new 50 is due to be replaced soon with a crappy plastic bank note.

If you have any pound coins with none standard designs on the reverse I would he interested in buying them off you for my child's coin collection. I only managed to collect around half the old pound coin designs ?

Apologies mate, but I left them in Bristol during my visit.  If I come across any other ones, I'll let you know!
