No, it doesn’t apply to everyone. How do you explain online sales where you don’t see the actual packaging or product before you receive it. I buy tons of single malt whiskey that way, for example.

It does. Read the question out loud. Then my answer. I said "massively" not totally or completely. You like cars? Architecture? Design? Art? Packaging is all those things. Pure blend of art and science. Packaging, outside prior experience, knowledge or trusted recommendation is the largest influencer.

I graduated from Art College in 1982 and worked at design firms in Toronto, mostly as a package designer. Cat food for Ralston Purina. Beers for Labatt, boxes of Kleenex.  Best line in market res

The product itseIf has to be great and, therefore, desired, I know, but if I'm completely honest great packaging is a significant cherry on top of any purchase I make and goes a long way to brand loya

I always thought that Ski Double Up yogurt containers were a fantastic idea. Sure, you could go buy a tub of vanilla yogurt and some muesli or fruit separately, but who wants that hassle?

I  love my Cohibas, but would enjoy them just as much if they came in ziplock baggies. Certainly,  there is a premium being paid for the nice boxes that they come in.

Not even a little bit in many cases.

Of course. Let’s talk about the cases where packaging is actually involved in the purchase.

ie; Varnished 898.

I am a big fan of packaging, being a lover of single malt scotch, the packaging will draw the eye, as any marketing tactic is meant to do. This sometimes does not come into play for me, some of my favorite single malts have terrible packaging. It's all dependent on preference for me. The thing for me with cigars is this, if I like what I see, i'll try it. I dabble in a bit of custom ashtrays made from cigar boxes so if the package on a single cigar box is cool enough and unique enough, I may stake a stab at it.

If you walked into a cigar store and they had two boxes of Behike 54’s, one in plain packaging as is starting to be mandated in some countries and one in its original packaging and they were the same price which would you choose? Now ask yourself if packaging influences you decision.

I agree also if the one in the original pack was say 15$ for which would you choose?

Me, original pack in that case. The extra enjoyment I’d get from my purchase at the time and in the future is worth the premium to me.

I like having nice cigar boxes but it doesn't factor at all in my purchasing decisions.

I agree I won’t buy because of packaging but given the choice of a cigar I enjoy the nice packaging is a bonus.

I agree with @Jeremy Festa on this. Packaging nearly aways has an influence whether preferential or abhorrent. @Lotusguy brings up a good point that at some point we can transcend packaging. Although I believe that requires knowledge of the product of which packaging once had influence over us.

For me, packaging of skateboards and wheels, trucks, etc no longer matter. After 25 years on the board I’m only concerned with size, shape and quality. I don’t care what the packaging/branding is.

Cigars, however I know the packaging plays some role even if minor. Example, I refuse to try a Monte Open based on packaging (among other reasons).

Lots of money has been spent on researching human behavior and why we choose one item over another. It's easy to conciously say that you have no preference in regards to how an item is packaged, and that may be true. However, the other 7 billion people on the planet are influenced by it.

The question is, how is the item advertised online? Do you see a pic of the product, or just text? If it is just text, and all you saw was the brand name and price, which would you choose? What makes you decide between one bottle or the other? The tasting notes? The price?

At this stage I don't buy whisky blind. I go to sit down style whisky tastings, take notes, find good bottles.

I think packaging goes both ways with me as a consumer. I want it to be packaged well and with attention to detail, but not gaudy. Classy and timeless looks seem to grab me.
With liquor, I cant buy a bottle with a screw top and some decent distillers still use them. I wanna see that cork. Its all in my head, I know. Still wanna see it.
With cigars, a tasteful band and possibly a simple ribbon or band on bottom. Nothing extra needed. Cigars are starting to look like they are sponsored by NASCAR! Kinda ridiculous.
With clothing, I never buy a shirt with print on the front larger than a business card. Just doesn't intrigue me.
