It seems sometimes I receive a box that smells glorious.  I put it in my humidor and a few months later the smell is muted.  Anyone else ever notice this?

(I know someone will ask: 68/68 is how I roll.)

Happens to me too. Although I would say "different" rather than "muted". I think that "Barnyard" aroma is stronger in some boxes than others, I often gets boxes that are very "floral" right of the truck or even more of a sweet/musky/dank smell. When you combine all those aromas, with the very strong cedar smell from the boxes I think that new odor is less pungent in any of the single characteristics. Also your cigars are WET when they first arrive to you, part of that odor intensity is lost as the cigars stabilize at your desired RH. I keep my wineadors at ~70 F and 63-65% RH. While the cigars smoke better at that RH I think you lose a bit more of that odor intensity in the box.

I've often noticed the same phenomenon. I chalk it up to, as @Corylax18 mentioned, the cigars being wet when they arrive. Humid air carries odor molecules more effectively, resulting in a stronger smell.

Once the boxes dry out properly in the humidor and get down to 62rh, the aroma just isn't as pungent anymore.

I think a slight factor in this, is that every postal depot i've ever been in, is swelteringly hot. Whenever I get a box delivered, its been in a depot building at least for one night. I think quite often our cigars reach us in the wettest, hottest condition they'll ever be in........unless they've come from Greece.

I'm sure if you put your cigars in a microwave, you'd get your barnyard back, ha!
