R. Lee Ermey, actor and former Marine, best known for his Golden Globe-nominated role as an intimidating drill sergeant in "Full Metal Jacket," has passed away aged 74 from complication of pneumonia.

A veteran of the Vietnam War, Ermey served 11 years in the Marines, He spent two years as a drill instructor at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego and rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant. Sorry to nitpick, but I have 2 comments to mention. Once you earn the title "marine", it stays with you for life. There is no such thing as being a "former" marine. Second, the marine corps does not have "drill sergeants", they have drill instructors. It sounds petty, but some Marines wouldn't think twice about jumping down your throat if you made the mistake of calling them a drill sergeant.

Oorah Gunny! Give them hell in the afterlife...

Big fan of the Gunny!  Loved him in Full Metal Jacket.  I read somewhere his tirade was improvised.  My favorite scene of all time.

Great actor.  He will be missed.

My grandfather was a Marine in the Pacific.  Still carry his dog tags with me to this day.

Semper Fi Gunny!  Thank you for your service.

*I remember first seeing Ermy in a Vietnam war movie that I can't remember the name of, I think Burt Lancaster, Stan Shaw, and I believe James Whitmore's son was in it. I was in the military then, myself, and was very captivated by his Gunny performance. He was only in the opening segment of the film just like in Full Metal Jacket, but he was totally unforgettable. I was initially looking at joining the Marines myself, but I let an Army E-7 talk me out of it and I joined the Army instead!  But even so, our Drill Sergeant was a former Marine who transferred over to the Army...and was rough as a bear. Two guys went AWOL that first night after he got through with everybody! RIP, SSGT Ermy.  Like you said, Marines are never allowed to die!

Full Metal Jacket is one of my all time faves. That first half is legendary for him alone.  RIP Gunny.

Once a Marine, always a Marine! He was a great example of that statement!

R. Lee Ermey will forever be known for his role as drill instructor Hartman in Full Metal Jacket, but I'd like to note here that he appeared in 60 films, many television shows and lent his voice to many roles, including all the Toy Story films. He was a good actor, contrast his role as the Police Captain in Se7en to his role as Hartman in Full Metal Jacket.

Stanley Kubrick was an exacting director. He never allowed his actors to improvise (except Peter Sellers, for obvious comic reasons in Dr. Strangelove) and he was known for multiple takes. The next time one sees Full Metal Jacket, remind yourself that R. Lee Ermey's scenes were all improvised and only required 2 or 3 takes.

Sad news. Gunny Ermy was a great Marine, who represented the United States Marine Corps to the very end. Rest easy Gunny, Semper Fi.

Very sad day, the first 45 minutes of Full Metal Jacket is amazing because R. Lee Ermey is just adlibbing it the entire time.
