Fake or Real. Monte Open Eagle.

Yeah, that was pretty gross.

My boss brought back a dozen "Cubans" and shared them with me and a coworker.  I never smoked 'em, but in retrospect I should have opened them rather than tossing them, for education purposes of course.  They just stunk so bad I didn't want them around....

Thinking deviously, pretty clever of them to fake a Monte Open in the Bahamas.  Regular cigar smokers tend to steer clear so the chances of them being bought by someone with knowledge decreases.  If they are being sold at small stands to transient tourists (cruise set I would imagine) who just want to try a cuban cigar, the forgers/sellers have a perpetual market of one time buyers (almost all foreign visitors) who most likely will never come back in a short enough time to remember who sold them such a terrible smoke (if they even realize how bad it was).  Considering that other non-cigar purchases are being made at the same time, its a nice way of adding to your profits.

Don't get me wrong, all for hanging the folks flogging that crap!

'that stuff you never want to smoke'

There's the rub though. Plenty of people LOVE their backwoods and white owls. That cigar in the video was, I daresay, probably better tobacco than the crap people buy at their local convenience store. Would I want to smoke it? Of course not. But a lot of people will smoke that and say 'it was pretty good, but I'm still not convinced cubans are all that.'

A lot of people won't want to believe that they were had. They would rather insist that they KNOW cuban cigars aren't better than their white owls, because they "tried one".

Apart from the smell, there seems to have been no way to tell its a fake without dissecting it-worrying

The cap looks terrible, no Cuban cigar should smell like Latakia, and it's tough to tell without seeing the band in person, but the gold "waves" look off center to me.

But when it comes down to it, know your vendor. :)
