Kitchen Posted December 22, 2017 Posted December 22, 2017 Just wondering what Maduro Cubans are currently on the market. Does anyone have a list? Thanks in advance.
jerrybrowne Posted December 22, 2017 Posted December 22, 2017 Kind of a short list. Cohiba Maduro 5 (Genios, Magicos, Secretos) and Partagas Maduro No. 1. 1
omgpauljr Posted December 22, 2017 Posted December 22, 2017 Out the Cohiba Maduro 5’s, I recommend the Secretos over the Magicos (I haven’t tried the Genios). I received a box from Rob recently and the one I tried was chocolate perfection. It was much better than the Magicos I tried earlier this year, which to me had less chocolate flavor and too much spice for my taste. The Secretos is a very small cigar, though.

GrouchoMarx Posted December 22, 2017 Posted December 22, 2017 Love the Genios - secretos are a great "shortie". I have boxeS of both! Never tried the magicos. 1
prodigy Posted December 22, 2017 Posted December 22, 2017 I have some Monte 2s and PE that are maduro. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G891A using Tapatalk 3

Kitchen Posted December 22, 2017 Author Posted December 22, 2017 Thanks for the replies all. Looks like Habanos produces quite the limited amount of maduros. Insofar as the non-maduro but very dark wrapper cigars, I am not sure if this would make a difference. I am under the impression that a true maduro wrapper goes through a different curing and fermentation process to get its flavor.

No, and neither do any of the cigars pictured above, dark as they may be. Cuba has a very specific set of criteria for classifying a maduro wrapper and it has nothing to do with the color although at one point in time it may have in an informal way. The leaf must come from shade-grown upper tapado leaf and must undergo at least one additional fermentation in bales. In the case of the Cohiba Maduro 5 line, once fermentation is complete, the leaf is aged for an additional 5 years. EL leaf is not necessarily comprised of upper tapado but can come from all upper levels of the plant, although it does go through an additional fermentation. Much of this leaf was deemed inferior for export-quality cigars until the EL program adopted their use in 2000 according to Simon Chase. I would venture to guess the upper tapado is the finest leaf of the top of the plant and other upper levels vary enough to make much of it unsuitable for premium cigars (again, until the 2000 EL program). The upper tapado is workable enough for a non-EL premium, hence the idea of incorporating it into two new lines (CM5 and PM1). Kitchen Posted December 23, 2017 Author Posted December 23, 2017 Although 9 out of 10 times I would go for a natural wrapper, there is sometime special about a well aged maduro the other 1/10 of the time. The Cohiba's have me interested; maybe if a 10 count box was posted on 24/24 I would bite. The price is too high otherwise.
jerrybrowne Posted December 23, 2017 Posted December 23, 2017 All of the Cohiba Maduro 5 cigars are good, but honestly I think that the best maduros are not Cuban. For example to me Arturo Fuente Anejos and Padron 64 Maduros are better than Maduro 5 Cohibas. 2

NC maduro wrappers are not standardized in any way and I've rarely seen any criteria for classification from any NC producers who tend to be very tight-lipped about pretty much everything they do. In other words, a NC maduro may be classified as such based strictly on color. In fact, it can even be classified as such after dyeing the leaf--something that still happens although far less than in years past. Basically, maduro means nothing concrete outside of the criteria the particular producer cites. In the specific case of Cuba, maduro happens to be leaf with particular features that have been presumably fully disclosed--upper tapado with at least one additional fermentation. I don't believe Fuente or Padron has ever disclosed any criteria for classifying wrapper leaf as maduro. Generally, darker shade wrapper is going to come from the upper part of the plant, but sun-grown plants tend to produce inherently darker wrapper, so a lower part of a sun-grown plant can produce a very dark wrapper and not even be a "maduro" or mature (last leaves to be primed at the top of the plant) leaf.
Guest Nekhyludov Posted December 23, 2017 Posted December 23, 2017 Strange times indeed when Cuba is leading the pack in standardization and transparency. Not usually their strong suits.
JayHabanos Posted December 23, 2017 Posted December 23, 2017 For NCs the Maduro offerings are usually better than than their non Maduro counterparts. I think it’s because the dark wrap masks the lower quality tobacco. Cuban Maduros although I do enjoy them are usually not worth the price hike. I have had the Genios, Magicos, Secretos and the Partagas. The Genios was good, the Magicos was disappointing, and the Secretos was a good value. The Partagas Maduro is pretty good. But I feel the exact opposite for Cuban Maduros; The higher quality tobacco is somewhat masked by the strong wrapper. I would rather go with the non Maduro CubansSent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
