ElPuro Posted September 4, 2017 Posted September 4, 2017 Apparently, Australians are the "most prolific gamblers in the world." Story: http://www.cnn.com/2017/08/28/health/australia-gambling-addiction-poker-slot-machines/index.html Not a "pokie" fan myself, but do love a good game of Texas hold'em. 1
JohnS Posted September 4, 2017 Posted September 4, 2017 It is quite incredible, when one visits a pub or a social club, and you see a room akin to a Las Vegas gambling room that is full of slot machines. Australians call these 'pokies'. It is especially sad to see the greatest number of these, at least in my town, are in the working-class areas. The duplicity of government, in regards to laws in the area of gambling (and alcohol) I consider mind-numbing. After every televised commercial, usually during Australian sporting events, the viewer is advocated to 'gamble responsibly'. Exactly what this phrase means is beyond me because I have never seen a definitive guide as to what responsibly gambling within your means is. Kudos to the very few politicians who have tried to help out gamblers with problems by restricting slot machines in licensed premises. Often they have faced significant hurdles in doing so. Because the government gains so much revenue via this means, its hypocrisy on this issue is self-apparent.
Fuzz AI Posted September 4, 2017 Posted September 4, 2017 I'd respond to say how ridiculous it is to think NSW has more than 50% of all pokies in the country, but I'm busy working on 15 paylines and I'm on a roll.... 1

Let me know next time you are up in our neck of the woods...you can take my mum and dad to the casino. last time I was with my mum at the Casino, I saw her hug her favourite machine

Guest Posted September 4, 2017 Posted September 4, 2017 I love a flutter... But I've never put a cent into a pokie machine.

Rustyman Posted September 4, 2017 Posted September 4, 2017 My mother is addicted to the damn things. I don't know how much hundreds of dollars she pours into these things each month. I guarantee it is greater than my disposable income.
ElPuro Posted September 4, 2017 Author Posted September 4, 2017 Never really understood the attraction to pokies given the fact no skill is really involved. Every time I've played, it always feels a bit "hollow," if that makes sense.
garbandz Posted September 4, 2017 Posted September 4, 2017 'gamble responsibly' means do not gamble more than you earn. I never took it up. Afraid I might like it..........

'Pokies' can become addictive because the stimulus provided is random, you never know when the jackpot will hit, so you keep playing to get a reward. It is the most powerful form of motivation.
Fuzz AI Posted September 4, 2017 Posted September 4, 2017 To paraphrase some lyrics, "Step up and play, each machine used to say, as I walk round and round the pokies arcade..."
shlomo Posted September 4, 2017 Posted September 4, 2017 Google Image "pokies". Been staring for 3 hours now. I'm an addict! 1
Williamos Posted September 4, 2017 Posted September 4, 2017 The demographics of poker machine distribution in the states that have them beggars belief. They are a tax on the poor, and against those who think they can beat the odds so heavily stacked against them. At least at the racetrack they give you a bloody go! I've known a couple of people who got hopelessly addicted to the one armed bandits and lost the lot. Absolute mongrels of things.Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk 2

OZCUBAN Posted September 5, 2017 Posted September 5, 2017 Over in the West they are illegal except in the one Casino here and that's a good thing ?
Fuzz AI Posted September 5, 2017 Posted September 5, 2017 I find it amusing that the biggest operators of poker machines in Australia, also happen to be our two biggest supermarket chains.
