It's not so much a fear of crabs, as it is a reluctance to shimmy into dark holes and fart around in a cramped space with something capable of severing fingers from hands.

It's how we catch crabs in the Dominican Republic too. Altough nobody actually dives inside the holes.

Well worth the effort though. A feed of chilli mud crabs is one of the most memorable meals.
