There are two of these that haven't moved in a few days, seem to be alive but don't move when I go near them. Anyone have any idea what they are?

i'd guess some sort of insect - dragonfly-like? - where the larvae/nymphs have got ready to evolve into their final stage and have crawled out of the water. it may be they have not moved as all you have left is the carapace. get a long stick and very gently give one a prod. i doubt that they are likely to do you any harm.

still, stranger things...

and some of our northern friends might have a much more accurate idea.

Thanks for that. I'll keep an eye on them and see if anything pops out. Would be interesting to see.

Ken's spot on. Dragonfly exuviae. You can take it off, it is just the fluffy, lightweight, hollow "shell".

UPDATE

Went out early this morning and there was a third one but this time the Dragonfly was still there; I assume it had just come out. By early afternoon it was still there. Based on this I now agree the original ones I saw are empty shells.

that is pretty exciting. you might have more to come.

I've had the pond for 15 years and this is the first time this has happened. Very cool.

As long as it's not a spider. Let it live

What if it's both?

As suggested, everyday we are seeing new ones. Up to about 12 so far.
