LLC Posted July 2, 2017 Posted July 2, 2017 There are two of these that haven't moved in a few days, seem to be alive but don't move when I go near them. Anyone have any idea what they are? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Ken Gargett Posted July 3, 2017 Posted July 3, 2017 i'd guess some sort of insect - dragonfly-like? - where the larvae/nymphs have got ready to evolve into their final stage and have crawled out of the water. it may be they have not moved as all you have left is the carapace. get a long stick and very gently give one a prod. i doubt that they are likely to do you any harm. still, stranger things... and some of our northern friends might have a much more accurate idea.
Ken Gargett Posted July 3, 2017 Posted July 3, 2017 have a look at some of these. https://www.bing.com/images/search?q=dragonfly+emerge&id=7446E348E0CB15DF181BFD9848424E82786AA932&FORM=IQFRBA
LLC Posted July 3, 2017 Author Posted July 3, 2017 Thanks for that. I'll keep an eye on them and see if anything pops out. Would be interesting to see. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Fugu Posted July 3, 2017 Posted July 3, 2017 Ken's spot on. Dragonfly exuviae. You can take it off, it is just the fluffy, lightweight, hollow "shell".
LLC Posted July 4, 2017 Author Posted July 4, 2017 UPDATEWent out early this morning and there was a third one but this time the Dragonfly was still there; I assume it had just come out. By early afternoon it was still there. Based on this I now agree the original ones I saw are empty shells. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk 4
