Inthestix
I have been on the forum for four days now and am on it every chance I get. I would like anyone's thoughts on how to become familiar with Cubans. What are your go to never fail cigars? My pocketbook won't handle $30 plus cigars, so I'm looking for those with far more experience than I to give me some direction. I have a sampler on the way, but I would like to hear what your favorites are including size. Thanks in advance for your thoughts. Happy smoking!! stinkhead
I believe Rob has a new to Cubans sampler. That's probably a good start that won't break the bank in order to try a bunch of stuff.
HavanaSunday
Samplers are a good way to try different marcas without committing to a box. A few of my lesser expensive staples are the Hoyo de Monterrey Petit Robusto, H Upmann Connie 1, Montecristo #4, Vegas Robaina Famoso, and Ramon Allones Specially Selected. stogieluver
Your sampler is a good start. You'll have to figure out what YOU like, and that journey is what this hobby is all about. Newbies seem to be attracted to the larger ring gauges, usually because they have been smoking non-Cubans, which are almost all large ring gauge cigars. The only advice I usually offer is to try the 38-46 ring gauge cigars. You will be amazed at the flavor of most of these smaller vitola's
Inthestix
That is am outstanding point. You are absolutely correct on the ring gauge. My favorite has become 52. Anything larger is to big for my taste. I will certainly look at trying some smaller gauges. The one thing I have found is that I think I was a larger cigar, but then finding myself hurrying through it or not finishing it because it's too big. The smaller gauge would certainly take care of that issue and as you say, give me a completely different flavor experience.
JMacSr
My first CC was Monte 4. Love them Lately my go to has been the RASS, I have found them very consistent lately, and at an excellent price point. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
CaptainQuintero
My advice would be to not rush exploring all the Cubans, take your time and enjoy it. One of the best parts of this journey is finding what you like and trying all the offerings, and you can only do that once. I keep a note book with a description of what flavours I tasted, a rating out of 100, size and if I would buy again etc for every new cigar I try. I'd certainly recommend having a go with doing something like that
dominattorney
I'd say grab a box of his upman majestic, which can be had for around 100 bucks a box. It was the first box I purchased on recommendation from anow initiated friend, and I always keep one in the humidor. It's an easy cigar to smoke, and the price is right. I'd also recommend a box of montecristo number 4 or 3, neither of which are terribly expensive, and both very good. I prefer the 3 personally for the additional depth of citrus flavor that I get from it. That would give you two boxes of cigars for roughly 300 dollars that would supplement the sampler you bought nicely with some daily cc smokes.
Corylax18
First, there is no fail safe anything coming out of cuba. Even in the best box, there may be a terrible cigar.(or a couple) Stop looking for perfection now, youll safe yourself alot of heartache. Samplers are a great way to get your feet wet. There are great cigars that can be had for $4, $5, dollars each. Dont feel like youre missing out because you cant drop $20 or $30 on a single cigar. You most definately arent. Some of those high priced sticks are great, others arent. Just like regular production. I am a big fan of sub 46 guage cigars and would echo the sentiment to explore cubans in that area. There are a lot of great cigars as thin as 32 and 33 guage. Keeping notes as you smoke is a great way to help you remember what uouve tasted and start cataloging what you enjoy. Popular Post Smallclub
IMHO you won't get any direction by asking people what are their favorite, because at the end of the day you will have 72 cigars named in this thread… Start with the samplers; when you find one cigar that you really like, try some other sizes in the same marca, OR try different marcas in the same size. The idea being to compare what's easily comparable…
oliverdst
I dont like the ideia of samplers (1 stick of different cigars) because one bad cigar can damage your thoughts about it for a long time. 3 sticks of the same cigars sound more interesting to me. Anyway, no matter what I would buy only non-expensive cigars.
SticksAndSticks
I started with Partagas because I was smoking a number of higher strength NCs at the time (Tatuaje, Liga, RomaCraft mostly). The thing that hooked me was that Partagas (shorts and Mille Fleurs) both had this musky taste I hadn't picked up before in any smoke. When I grab a Partagas its always there despite what other elements of the profile change. From there I fell down the hole because I wanted to see what the other Marcas had to offer. Also I strongly echo the advice from earlier on not getting the most expensive sticks. The magic is in the regular production blends. Try some Petit Coronas and robustos. mnmlst
You can also look for when quarter boxes are offered on 24:24 and try some according to Rob's description of the flavor notes.
