Damn, didn't even realize he was still alive.

Bravo, Mr. Douglas, for making it a full century!

Wow, I didn't realise he's 100 today! I admire his steely determination to re-learn how to talk after his stroke in 1999. As for his filmography, well, you know there was something special if you've seen him play the main antagonist to Robert Mitchum in just his second movie, Out of the Past in 1947 (considered an essential classic film noir of its era). Then his brilliant performance for Billy Wilder in 1951, Ace in the Hole, his famous portrayal of Vincent van Gogh in Lust for Life, but for me, his very, very special contributions to cinematic history involve his collaborations with the late and great Stanley Kubrick, namely Paths of Glory in 1957 and Spartacus in 1960. In my mind, it's inevitable that two such powerful personalities could only do two movies together, only Joe Turkel and Philip Stone did three with Kubrick, and their parts where supportive. Peter Sellers is the lone actor to do two movies with Kubrick in a main role/s after Kirk Douglas.

I am extremely grateful for both Paths of Glory and especially Spartacus, which get repeat views annually in my household.

Always learn something when JohnS takes the film bait. Cheers!

"Spartacus" and "The Vikings"  are my perennial  favorite Kirk Douglas films; but he made a low-budget comedy in 1979 called, "The Villain" with an unknown Arnold Schwarzenegger as "the roadrunner" type, and Kirk as the Wily Coyote type trying to ambush him while accompanying damsel Ann-Margaret through the dangerous western frontier. That thing just kept tickling my funny bone, with Paul Lynde as Chief Nervous Elk who observed to his Indian scouts about Douglas; "he doesn't need a horse - he needs a doctor!" Kirk played Cactus Jack Slade. I still can't get enough of that movie! It was made by stuntman Hal Needham.

I know this film!   Have happened upon it several times while channel surfing and sat down to watch.

I listen almost exclusively to Radio Classics on XM. Kirk Douglas pops up in many old-time radio episodes, and you absolutely cannot mistake his voice.  A fantastic entertainer.

The original Doc Holliday.  Love the old movies and he's in a few classics.  I too was unaware he was still alive as I remember he suffered a bad stroke some years back.

I saw him on the news and he looked very strong for a guy who just hit the ton.
