I've never had the opportunity to try this cigar.  I know the cabs are in short supply (an understatement, perhaps?), and I know they are highly sought after when available.  What is the current status of this cigar, I.e. when does it typically become available, and is it really worth the hype?  I'm trying to decide if I should drop the coin should I ever come across a cab of these.

My single favorite cigar. If you've never had one, you should try a single or three first.  On the other hand, there's no shortage of people who would buy the remaining 46 or 47 cigars off you, so it's not really a big risk.

I will personally slap you if you don't get them

Haha...you've got to find them first! (And best of luck with that!)

I have had only 2 from a cab.  Both were quite nice.  I still have the one from the Christmas Sampler 2015 as well as the Lonsdale that I can't bring myself to smoke.  Maybe on the 4th I will break one out.  What better time.

Ha!  Fly me to Oz and you can slap me and kick me.  But I will expect a SLR DC in return.  :D

I've only smoked '05s and '07s, so I can't comment on recent production.... I thought of smoking my last '05 for the "throw a dog a bone" review comp, but couldn't bring myself to spend the time. For me, they have been lackluster. Rob held a five year group review of '07 cabs, reviews starting in '08 - they shouldn't be that hard to find. I don't recall anyone finding them anything special.....

Have some '12 from a cab split that are stellar. Get a cab if you can swing it!

I can swing it.  I just can't find it.  PM me if anyone has a source.

Yes, these and Partagas 8-9-8's are hard to find at the moment.

Actually I can do one better as I have some Churchills from a fiddy cab with your name on them!

I remember that little experiment. From memory, only the first 3 yrs were reported. I think everyone lost interest after that.

Unfortunately, every single SLR DC I've had has been found wanting. :frown:

A wonderful refined smoke. Highly recommended?

Thanks for the input.   These extremely diverse opinions of this cigar remind me of opinions about Cohiba's.  It really makes spending large coin a crap shoot.  I wish these things came in a 25 box so it wouldn't be such a gamble.  Not a big fan of box splits because of the hassle, but these sound like a perfect candidate for a split if I ever come across a cab.  Sounds like I wouldn't have any problem finding the other half of the split.

When I was a poor student I came across an 09 cab and knew I had to snatch it up. Have smoked less than 10 of them since then...some have been great and some have been bland...not bad, just muted. Figured they need more time. That was the only time I ever saw them with my usual vendor and I have checked back pretty regularly...it's been more than five years since I last saw them floating around. I was glad to snap it up and I anticipate this cab will be with me for a long time.

It depends on personal tastes and blend quality. The 2001/2002 are really tasty for a DC. I'm just not a huge fan of DCs in general. I always end up getting bored of larger smokes. It's like drinking weak beer. Cuban inconsistency is also a big factor. Being hard to find drives their appeal factor.

Are we talking about 25 or 50 cabs or whatsoever?

Oliver, I don't think they come in anything other than a 50.  Trevor's CCW shows they only come in 50's.

You are right, I guess.

Last time they were around in 24:24 the price was something like $600

Saint Luis Rey, Doble Corona 07 Cab 50.

The ashes

Vitola: Prominentes

Total smoking time 2:15

Construction/burn was perfect, easy and smooth

Taste medium, consisting mainly of beany, earthy and coffee taste. Increasing slightly in strength. Some floral tones on the retrohale.

Verdict 9/10

Enjoyable smoke with a beautiful, refined taste. Top class.

Agreed.  If you ever found a cab, you would not have a problem getting rid of them with the ravenous bunch that frequent this watering hole :waving:

One of the best DCs in my book. Of course subjective, but would take them any day over a Lusi. Head-to-head with the mighty RAG.
