jwr0201 Posted May 21, 2016 Posted May 21, 2016 Interesting the effect that choice of liquid refreshment choice has on the taste of a cigar. Water allows all of the cigars tastes and flavors to come through, both good and not so good. Coffee tends to bring out the subtle chocolate, cocoa and expresso nuances. Coke or diet coke smooths out rough edges a tad. Most spirits enhance a nice cigar - a natural pairing. Personally, I find that coffee and nice rums, bourbons and scotches drown out some harshness or mongrel. IMHO, good beers that are low in IBU's pair beautifully. On the other hand, strong IPA's can overpower all but the strongest cigars. I'm enjoying a bit of a rough NC now and am glad to have a coffee to tone down the sharp edges. 1
stogieluver Posted May 22, 2016 Posted May 22, 2016 Cuba Libre is my drink of choice, and there's a reason it and the mojito, which is also very sweet, are so popular in Cuba. 1
demer Posted May 22, 2016 Posted May 22, 2016 I usually just drink a lemon lime seltzer with my cigars.
SofaKing Posted May 22, 2016 Posted May 22, 2016 Stouts are the only beer I will pair withcigars. Otherwise rum to bring out the sweeter notes or whiskey for the earth/wood notes depending on the stick. One thing I do like aboutboth is the alcohol seems to cleanse the palate between sips if the cigar starts to gets harsh or mundane. 1
leftimatic Posted May 22, 2016 Posted May 22, 2016 Funny I was just thinking of starting a post similar to this not 5 minutes ago. I just smoked a Boli CJ and paired it up with this decaf instant coffee alternative thingy called Akava. Used to be known as Krakus. Been drinking it for years, anyway it was the most perfect pairing I have ever encountered. I swear by the second third the drink and the cigar started to taste exactly the same. By the last third the finish between the two just morphed together over and over. It was very interesting and enjoyable. I may have to try again tomorrow just to be sure I wasn't just suffering from the heat.
ThePolskiOgorki Posted May 24, 2016 Posted May 24, 2016 German style weiss aka wheat beer is a good option. Escpecially true in warmer weather as I find them to be really refreshing when it's hot out. The fruity/citrusy flavours help cleanse the palette nicely. They just seem to work for me.
Scroats Posted May 24, 2016 Posted May 24, 2016 I drink what I want when I want. Don't pay it too much heed. Except white wine. Wow. Not the biggest fan of whites to begin with but that made the wine and the cigar both taste like crap.
busdriver Posted May 25, 2016 Posted May 25, 2016 Just discovered drinking Irish whiskey with cigars. I prefer bourbon usually but a good irish whiskey really does something for savory stick like partagas. I also recently found an ipa that pairs well with cigars! I am very happy since I love both but have always felt they dont jive. However Bells Two Hearted Ale really did nicely with some sticks over the weekend (Mag 56 and Parti 898).
jimsta10 Posted May 25, 2016 Posted May 25, 2016 Great topic. I've been drink single malt whiskeys with my cigars for about a year and wanted to see what others are trying and ironically I was researching the exact same thing 2 days ago. Here are some popular drinks and brands from my research. Comments welcome. Mojito (no brainer) with Havana Club 3 years Ron Zacapa (Rum) Havana Club (Rum) Some people are saying that scotch tends to burn or hides the true taste of cigars and sweeter drinks are great for pairing. Cheers
maxcjs0101 Posted May 25, 2016 Posted May 25, 2016 I had this young-ish Dominican puro yesterday and though i had it dryboxed, the taste was super full bodied and my 7-up was too mild and the whole experience was off.I couldn't even finish half the stick (corona) because it was so full bodied. How i wished that i had coffee during that time.
over29 Posted May 25, 2016 Posted May 25, 2016 Rum or stouts for me, going to give Irish whiskey a try though.
joeruby Posted May 27, 2016 Posted May 27, 2016 Stout, whiskey, rum, red wine, coffee, all go down great for me with cigars. I always like to try different drinks that hopefully enhance, or at least compliment the pleasure of a great cigar.
Blazer Posted May 27, 2016 Posted May 27, 2016 If I'm trying a cigar for the first time its usually just water. If I know the cigar well I will pair with beer, a full bodied red wine or my favorites port or Pedro Ximenez sherry.
cigcars Posted May 28, 2016 Posted May 28, 2016 Only iced herb teas sweetened with raw or organic honey! 1
CaptainQuintero Posted May 28, 2016 Posted May 28, 2016 I really enjoy a glass a milk with a cigar, it's a must try. If you've never tried it then I'd fully recommend it. Milky iced coffee Gin and lemonade is a favourite Coke Cola also I'm not a huge drinker whilst smoking but these few I certainly enjoy for a change
Nrengle Posted May 28, 2016 Posted May 28, 2016 I like a good bottle of Red. penfolds Bin 138, Molly Dooker two left feet, Grgich Hills Cab...
Fosgate Posted May 29, 2016 Posted May 29, 2016 I had a couple interesting beers last week with a pairing. First was a Rambler aka Cola Beer (IPA or Pilsner beer mixed about 1/4 with coke). Anyone who has had those before knows it's unique flavor and then paired with a cigar I found to be like a comfort food kind of enjoyment. Second was an Old Rasputan Russian Imperial Stout at 12% ABV on Nitro. Creamy smooth sweetness went really well with R&J Wide Churchill I was smoking.
