LordAnubis Posted January 20, 2016 Posted January 20, 2016 Well there's your problem! It took them that long to develop a telescope capable of finding a brain in a hockey player! *runs and hides from all the canadians*
CanuckSARTech Posted January 20, 2016 Posted January 20, 2016 "The first player to regularly wear a helmet for protective purposes was George Owen, who played for the Boston Bruins in 1928–29." - Wikipedia. Sorry, Dr G, but that little tidbit had incorrect dates in there. Apparently... Canadian men were/are only half stupid.
Drguano Posted January 20, 2016 Author Posted January 20, 2016 It must be true. I saw it on the Internet! 1
JohnS Posted January 20, 2016 Posted January 20, 2016 The original joke might have focused on the game of cricket as 'protectors' (or boxes as they are called) were first used in first-class cricket in the 1870's, but helmets for batsmen only started in the mid-1970's. https://www.quora.com/When-was-the-first-cup-or-abdomen-guard-used-in-first-class-cricket
Ken Gargett Posted January 20, 2016 Posted January 20, 2016 i remember chatting to a canadian years ago and he asked me where i was when i heard the news. what news? he looked at me like i was insane. the news. when gretsky left the oilers (i reckon an aussie even knowing that was impressive - my sister lived in edmonton for a while). told him i had no idea. he was stunned. he truly put it on a par with americans knowing where they were when JFK was shot. for him, not only was it a major disaster of biblical proportions but one of the seismic events of the 20th century. i have met canadians less obsessed.

So some dude leaving an oil drilling company was important?
Ken Gargett Posted January 20, 2016 Posted January 20, 2016 So some dude leaving an oil drilling company was important? we are talking about a nation with dead vegetation on its flag and the national sport is pushing a rock around on ice. i of course speak in jest (before i get another suspension) as i have many sealbasher mates.
Drguano Posted January 21, 2016 Author Posted January 21, 2016 It is sad that a country that gave the world Justin Bieber and Ted Cruz is only remembered as seal bashers. Um…wait a minute...
TheFullMontecristo Posted January 21, 2016 Posted January 21, 2016 "sealbasher" lol. and It wasn't until 1959 that a hockey goaltender wore a mask full-time after Montreal Canadiens goaltender Jacques Plante was struck in the face by a shot from Andy Bathgate.
LLC Posted January 21, 2016 Posted January 21, 2016 It is sad that a country that gave the world Justin Bieber and Ted Cruz is only remembered as seal bashers. Um…wait a minute... But we were smart enough to give them both to the US 2
Ken Gargett Posted January 21, 2016 Posted January 21, 2016 may i assure everyone that sealbasher is used only in the form of a term of endearment.
Drguano Posted January 21, 2016 Author Posted January 21, 2016 Perhaps it would sound more congenial if you used French, "fesser de phoque"...
... Posted January 21, 2016 Posted January 21, 2016 Perhaps it sound more congenial if you used French, "fesser de phoque"...Yeahhhh, no. Your French is either rusty or Google translate material. No worries, we have a great history of being polite and patient with children ?
Drguano Posted January 21, 2016 Author Posted January 21, 2016 Yeahhhh, no. Your French is either rusty or Google translate material. No worries, we have a great history of being polite and patient with children Don't tell Ken. Seal spanker is more endearing than seal basher...
... Posted January 21, 2016 Posted January 21, 2016 Don't tell Ken. Seal spanker is more endearing than seal basher...Well, I only spank when I am explicitly asked to do so, and no seal has ever been involved ?
HarveyBoulevard Posted January 21, 2016 Posted January 21, 2016 Every time I see the title of this thread I only think of 1 thing.... Despite the Tux, Canada did give the world the greatest food ever...and no...I am not kidding.
