mcease022 Posted January 19, 2016 Posted January 19, 2016 posted January 16, 2016 11:26 AM Hi All, I am pretty giddy. I have been smoking for years but very casual. I am starting to get serious about cigars. I am going to Cuba soon and I have limited experience with cigars. I've been smoking for years, but never that much, so I haven't experienced a whole lot of cigars. I know that I like Cohiba Maduro and Robusto. I enjoyed the Siglo III and I also had a Montecristo tubo that I really enjoyed. I have roughly $1000 CAD to spend. I love Cohiba, but would like to get a variety of cigars. Can you recommend your favorite Cohiba and others as well. TIA.
NSXCIGAR Posted January 19, 2016 Posted January 19, 2016 Good luck on your trip and smoke as much as you can! I think a good place to start would be looking at Rob's best of lists for the last 2 years. Everyone's got their favorite vitola and favorite marca but there's been some stuff that's really smoking great lately. Cohiba Esplendidos, RyJ Churchills, RA Superiores. And I always recommend Rob's samplers if you're just trying to get a feel for different brands and vitolas. They're a great deal and hand-picked.
Habana Mike Posted January 19, 2016 Posted January 19, 2016 If you're planning to buy on your Cuba trip I suggest you try a number of different brands and sizes at the various LCDH shops and decide what you like from that. Take a look at the suggested posts above to get an idea of what to select for trial. Make sure you don't fall victim to the plethora of scams you'll encounter. If it's not from a legitimate shop and particularly if the price is too good, most likely fakes. You should pick up a few custom rolls too (search here for that), they're a treat and hard to get anywhere else. Enjoy!
stogieluver Posted January 19, 2016 Posted January 19, 2016 With that limited amount of coin, suggest you spend it on marca's other than Cohiba. You'll get more bang for your buck, and my personal opinion is Cohiba is over rated if smoking them with less than five years of age. Plenty of other damned good CC's available for half the price of Cohiba's.
squizz Posted January 19, 2016 Posted January 19, 2016 Go corona gorda vitola! Mag 46, Hoyo Sec No 1, Juan Lopez No 1, cohiba IV, RyJ No3, and RA superiores.
LLC Posted January 19, 2016 Posted January 19, 2016 Keep in mind your $1000 Canadian will probably be worth a little under 600 CUC.
stogieluver Posted January 19, 2016 Posted January 19, 2016 Keep in mind your $1000 Canadian will probably be worth a little under 600 CUC. In other words, 1 and 1/2 boxes of Cohiba, at best.
Popular Post JohnS Posted January 19, 2016 Popular Post Posted January 19, 2016 (There's) All good suggestions here. As Mike said, stick only to official LCDH outlets... http://www.friendsofhabanos.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=123440 Rob's Top 25 of 2015 and Planetary's FOH 2015 Top 10 Cigars Tally are excellent guides as to what is smoking well, according to our members. . Finally, Smallclub graciously provided a link to the latest prices in CUC recently. You can follow it here. You can see how current pricing for Cohiba is not going to allow you to get the variety of cigars you should with 1000CAD (or 600 CUC). At the very least, get one 3-pack of Piramides Extra, or Robustos, or Siglo II's/IV's/VI's, depending on your preferred vitola. I would get some Ramon Allones Superiores, H.Upmann Petit Coronas or Connoisseur No.1's at the very least. 5
mcease022 Posted January 19, 2016 Author Posted January 19, 2016 Keep in mind your $1000 Canadian will probably be worth a little under 600 CUC. I know the $CAD is taking a beating. What a horrible time to go to get cigars. Oh well still cheaper than here. Thank you for the advice guys. I will grab some Cohiba, but spread out my funds in other options as well. I will try to up my budget to $1500 by the time I go in a couple months.
ElJefe Posted January 19, 2016 Posted January 19, 2016 I say go for the custom rolls first - I've never been to Cuba but my game plan would be to smoke various vitolas from the highly sought after rollers such as Yolanda, Alfonso.....etc. Once you know what you like and what you think has legs for aging, I would say stock up on that. Although the word is that regionals are thin on the ground and so is aged stock as is usually available at some hotels/ stores / shops etc, try what you can find and then Score a box or two of what you like best. In terms of Cohiba and regular production stuff just buy from Rob. Put some $$$ aside as your Cohiba fund and keep perusing the 24:24 deals for when ElLaguito boxes or just pure stellar runs of Cohiba boxes come along. I personally am quite a big fan of the Siglo II with about one plus year of age on them; plus Siglo II boxes don't break the bank. I have it in mind to try some Siglo IV's, Esplendidos and Lanceros but I'm gonna have to set aside a few bonus checks to make that happen. Beyond that mate I wish you fun and safe travels. I'm sure more experienced members who have traveled to Cuba several times can guide you even more so. Best Wishes.

Did you read the original post? The OP has no experience, do you think one week in Cuba will make him able to know what "has legs for aging"?
