The 50th Anniversary Cohiba…What's all the fuss?

Some people were announcing the world the news about the Cohiba ultimate cigar during the last Partagas week and I assumed they were referring to the 50th Anniversary cigar to be unveiled last week of Feb. during the celebration of the Habanos Festival.

Another Cohiba is always a reason to be happy especially when one holds some hope that things should change for the better. What I first heard some time ago is that cigar is not part of the production plan of El Laguito but H.Upmann which is no surprise to me the way things are. After confirming that, I witnessed the molds at Upmann and the rollers working their magic to get the most of that stogie. The cigar is massive, which is quite controversial to me. Why not rolling a special Signature Coronas Especiales instead? The one and only concern is the leaves to be used in the making of those cigars not the packaging nor the molds. The best idea would be keeping the production at El Laguito with 3 or 4 designated rollers and stop making things more complicated and dubious.

Dimensions are the following: 60 ring gauge and 178 mm long. I don´t know anything when it comes to the blend but if one could reach my hands anytime soon, I hope the taste reminds me the glory of the Cubans I keep always longing for. Let´s wait.

I agree that for a big anniversary like 50 they should stick to special releases of the classic line vitolas (Laguito 1& 2 and Julieta 2) like they do with the Gran Reservas. I mean, you are supposed to be honoring the tradition of the brand...rolleyes.gif

60 ring gauge is simply ridiculous. Not for me, never.

IMHO we are thinking of this as cigar smoker which is not how the maarketing peiple see this which is as a collectable and not a cigar meant for smoking. That makes the blend and where they are rolled immaterial to a degree. Bummer

Yikes! That is a big smoke. I will save my pennies for some nicely aged Cohibas like lanceros, robustos, esplendidos etc.

Client Marketing Director: "Isn't there a point where the manipulation is so embarrassingly obvious that it loses its effectiveness...and we, the premier brand in Cuba, lose credibility and respect from our core constituency?"

Ad Agency Account Exec: "Not with the target demographic here."

Marketing Director: "I dunno...."

Ad Agency Account Exec: "Look, we cropped the photo so it no longer shows her on her knees. Ya gotta leave me with something."

Marketing Director: "She's holding it so ummm....tenderly. Beautiful. OK."

I don't know - I see it as a natural progression. Cigars like the BHKs and Robustos Supremos were well received by.............
