Hey Folks,

I've been invited to bring a bottle to a wine tasting at company headquarters in Stockholm in January. These tastings are organized by the Wine Appreciation committee. These folks are moderately experienced and are particularly entertained by the curious, the different, the challenging for these tastings.

That said, would any of you be able to recommend a red that would be an intriguing pour for such an occasion? If the wine or the vineyard has an interesting story (i.e., founded by retired pirates) so much the better.

I would have to be able to purchase it at a good local wine shop as or order it online.

Cheers and thanks for the ideas!

I'd suggest something from the Rhone Rangers. Given your predilections I think the 2011 Le Cigare Volant normale would be apropos..... http://shop.bonnydoonvineyard.com/product/2011-Le-Cigare-Volant-normale

The first thing that came to mind for me:

Giuseppe Mascarello Freisa Toetto - kind of an off the beaten path wine from Peimonte.

P.S. In thinking on it a bit more, it might not get much more intriguing than Vigneti Campanino Sur Lie Appenninico Rosso Frizzante. 100% Colorino - it's a deep earthy red with fizz. It can be served lightly chilled, but not truly necessary. If you want to get a little spendy (and if it can be found) the Erpacrife Sparkling Nebbiolo Rosé is one of the finest sparklers produced on the planet.

If you go this route, find a bottle of Bonny Doon Marion Berry.

Black berry liquer distilled by Randall Graham, very cool story behind this man and his products.

He has several Eau d'vie to enjoy..........

Saladini Pilastre Rosso Piceno, Total Wine has this in four levels, intense Piemonte wines for a song.....

Let your panel try it and then tell them the price...........

For what it's worth, this is from the Le Marche region, and I agree it's a great wine for short money. Boccadigabbia also produces a decent Rosso Piceno at a decent price. From the Rosso Conero zone in Le Marche, I enjoy the wines of Fattoria Le Terrazze.

I have a few "intriguing" suggestions for you.

The 2014 Estio Macabreo La Purisma - this wine has that "blue cheese" effect. The smell and the taste are different. Both thoroughly enjoyable. But it really throws you.

The 2010 Anima Negra AN2 - a Mallorcan wine that I cannot get enough of. First encountered it at Loam Restaurant in Galway. I have since found a source here in Oz. Highly recommend. My number one red discovery this year.

Finally, please don't laugh, but the Pellegrino Passito di Pantelleria from Sicily. Any year. It's pure sugar. But refreshing. And complex. I find it's the best way to end any extended meal. But more recently, many friends who I have given it to, have commented very surprisingly and positively on it.

Salute
