What I carry in my travels

So people ask me what I travel with. Now I don't have much stuff to begin with. Not a man of material belongings. This is what gets me around the world anywhere for as long as I need. Anywhere from 3 days to 3 years, this is all I need. And it all is taken as carry on luggage. I hate checking luggage in. Never do it.

Firstly the main bag. It's a Tom Bihn Aeronaut 45. They make brilliant bags! Quality is fantastic, the packability is great as well. Pretty much a duffel bag with backpack straps and should straps. Carry it how you wish. This is my carry on luggage.

So here's what's in it.

Side pocket 1;

- toiletries

- Emergency first aid/medicine kit

- Bag with my shemagh in it

- Bag with other necessities, like some paracord, cable ties, spare plastic bags, water proof bags for copies of passport etc.

- and for this trip (to havanathon then back to work) a special gift of a havanathon survival kit by the lovely Lucinda! Thank you!

- On the very side there's also a pair of thongs (not in picture)

Side pocket 2

- Xikar 5 ct traveldor.

- Glasses case

- Plenty of extra room

Main pocket

- Two pairs of jeans (one wearing, one in bag)

- Board shorts, rashie and thermal top

- Three shirts (one wearing, two in bag)

- Three socks, 4 undies, 4 undershirts (wearing one of each rest in bag)

- Waterproof sea to summit bag for dirty clothes

- Pacsafe 5L travelsafe

- 3 kg of coffee that I need to take back to work with me.

Then my "personal item". A Tom Bihn Pilot.

In it there is;

- travel neck pillow.

- Smythson currency pouch that I use as my travel wallet for passport currencies, vaccination book etc

- Peak Eiger ultra torch

- My wallet. Yes it's a plastic zip lock bag from a remote control car part.

- Headphone case

- Red organiser pouch with minor electronics, usb sticks, iPhone cable, another copy of passport etc, SIM cards.

- Hand sanitiser

- Microsoft surface pro 2, power cables for it, universal travel adapter.

And all packed into the bag.

The only change to this is when travelling to a cold country the coffe has to be left behind and the space is filled with three or four jackets.

Nice. I took more than that for a 4 night domestic trip! What do you do for shoes? One pair only???

Yep one pair only. Normally steel blue boots. Comfortable, waterproof, can walk in them for days. Wearing of course. When in the hostel room I'll walk around with the thongs.

There are also a few extras that get thrown in here when needed. Prayer mat if I'm going somewhere unknown, sleeping bag if I'm going to hostel.

And, IMHO, it's bush-league to waste packing space on thongs. I just carry mine in my back pocket. Like that they don't fill up the suitcase, they're always handy and make for great conversation at the security check.

Wife and I both over pack...always have. We recently just bought brand new larger (and lighter suitcases)...lol. And we both like when we can travel by car, in my nice and roomy F150 SuperCrew

Mus, mate, look... I rated you fairly highly last night. And then saw Westy's comment, and it got me thinking.

I just went on a 6 week, European, holiday, and took a backpack smaller than that. So wondering what my rating would be?

The three girls I travelled with, took about 99kg. One is 30, the other is 4, and the other is 1. And that's 9kg over their allowance. But I didn't have any, as mine was a backpack, so realistically, we were 21kgs under.

I just checked the shots from last year's trip too. And will post them from my phone.

And by the way. What in the name of all that is good and holy can you possibly put in all those bags? Are you carrying a car dismantled into parts in there?

I don't truthfully know either. If I am asked to get the girls dressed, I have to be very, very, careful not to mess up the bags. This is paramount. And way more dangerous than ebola. You mess up a side of the summer clothes suitcase, and a cardigan gets knocked in from the winter clothes side. Don't even. I can't even. It wasn't even a holiday!

I'm jealous. I could never travel that light. I have to tote my work tools, CPAP machine, etc. when I travel. I prefer to drive... up to 6hrs. I refuse to fly anywhere with 2 toddlers. My wife gets anxious just going through the airport. The whole routine of flying for work has become second nature at this point.

Family trip (My wife, 7yr old daughter and 2 yr old son) back to HK to visit my 96 yr old grandmother. On the way to leave HK, you know you have a problem when the Taxi driver is having problems arranging the mountain of suitcases into the boot of the car.

2 Large suitcases, 3 medium suitcases, 2 carry old suitcases, stroller and backpack.
