godpheonix Posted July 29, 2015 Posted July 29, 2015 Just thought i'd share my notes on the cigars i had over my vacation. just some quick notes and not a full review but interesting i think. most of these were my first of each. enjoy! 1. casa magna domus magnum - good nicaraguan cigar. creamy on the palate with a dark chocolate taste and soft white pepper at the core. had a whisky with it but this would pair better with a coffee.2. montecristo petit edmundo - '09 box code i think. pure monty flavors with that spice on the forefront and great balance. smoked it down to the nub!3. cohiba siglo VI - '12 box code. so some age on it but you can tell there's lot more to come from a bit more aging. the flavors were there but very nuanced and fleeting, especially the honey sweetness. still a very creamy and balaced smoke. can't fault it because its young!4. cohiba robusto - '13 box code. these are seriously good and the honey taste is starting to show with the rest of the cohiba profile already there.5. cohiba BHK 52 - jan '14 box code. humm...not much to say, its just not quite there yet. everything fits the part except for the taste, good but nothing special. i tihnk the rest are gonna go for a long long nap!6. cohiba 1966 - nov '11 box code. this was the bomb! simply outstanding complexity. peaches and cream profile all the way with other flavors dropping in and out all over the place. best cigar i had in a long timeone issue though, half the burn went wonky and i had to do many touch ups but this had no effect on the flavor at all7. Viaje TNT - i was surprised how good this was. very smooth and creamy with a nutty sweetness all the way with some coffee and coco notes creeping up once and a while. more complexed than i thought.this had around 3 years of aging on it that might of done it some good, taking that edged off.8. illusione ECCJ 20th - excellent cigar and one of the best i had from this list. complex and decadent, like creamy sweet nougat all the way through which intensifies as you smoke it bringing loads of other nuanced flavors like caramel and chocolate and coffee.actually this cigar almost has nothing to do with your typical NC cigar profile and more like a cuban, like a great CC at that!!9. H. upmann royal robusto - this has a lovely upmann profile with just an added kick of spice to it. well balanced and should be even better a few years down the track. really enjoyed this one.10. Nat sherman Joel sherman 75th celebration - i think i needed to give it a bit more time to adjust in the Humi. i tried it a few days after getting the box. my mistake. overall though it was a good stick but the flavors were too nuanced and fleeting.at the core floral and white pepper but should unveal much more flavors in a few months.11. Padron family reserve 45th maduro - all the great flavors of an anniversary series Padron with some more intensity. a great smoke! these are made to go with coffee in my opinion. very rich!12. Padron family reserve 85th natural - this one surprised me, it was strong and you could feel it and it took a bit of the padron flavors away from me. good cigar, but i think it just needs time to settle a bit for some reason. like my Padron 1926 Ann. No.9's which turned out to be marvelous!13. Partagas salomon - '11 box code. a really good cigar thats on the lighter side of the Partagas flavors, which is good for me since its a BIG cigar! the flavors do not evlove much but it has nice light spices and white pepper with a sweat earthy core.14. Partagas P2 - '14 box code. for such a young cigar it smoked great! no hard edges all the way through. earthy like dark coco, coffee with a nice sweetness to it. it also had like a herbal note that made the whole smoke kinda of refreshing. very creamy and well balanced. loved it! can't wait to try these with a bit more age!15. Edmundo Dantes Conde 54 - '11 box code, box number 332\1000. this cigar reminds me a lot of the grand edmundo LE back in 2010. very similar flavors which i love! i paid a premium for these since there are'nt too many around now. luscious, creamy, almost dessert like cigar with monty-esque flavors. beautiful!!16. La esception Selectos finos - '11 code. like a sweet red pepper flavor dominates this cigar. its not overpowering by any means but you really have to take your time to smoke it. its full bodied and strenght above medium. other flavors that surface is chocolate, coffee cream and some type of dry hay and some nutty notes as well. complex and great!17. Por Larranaga Maginificos - '07 code. por larranaga all the way! a nice caramel flavor was always present with some fresh cedar\hay and coco notes as well. this cigar as more years to go to develop its flavors. one of my favorites on this list! 18. Fonseca No1 - '13 box code. very nice floral flavors with a medium body. i actually really enjoyed this cigar! its not complex but the flavors are very present. along with the floral, you get earthy tobacco and nutty notes with just the right amount of sweetness.19. Saint Luis Rey Series A - '13 box code. totally plugged! i tossed it after an half inch of struggling with it! i hope the rest of them are not like that! for what i was able to smoke the flavors were actually enjoyable with a nice sweet hay character.20. cohiba Siglo V - '12 box code. one of my favorites! i'm not sure if it has do to with the ring gauge being smaller but those honey notes really come through more on these earlier than on the other siglos in terms of aging. beautiful cigar, not any hard edges at all. smooth and creamy all the way. a joy!21. cohiba siglo IV - '12 box code. very similar in profile to the siglo V but not as refined and less honey notes and more strenght but age will make these shine as i got lovely buttery notes in the final third, like butter cooked on a grill!!!22. AF opus X super belicoso - its got a few years of age, maybe 4. i'm not sure how to describe the taste. it was like a soft cotton candy cream profile with thinck and lucious smoke, really original, never experienced it in another cigar. i was actually expecting this to be a powerhouse cigar, with bold black pepper notes and a nicotine kick but not even close. As this is my first opus X, i'm not sure how it compares to other opus x cigars. but if its like this...then i'll be getting more for sure!!! thanks, Steve 2

btp1979 Posted July 29, 2015 Posted July 29, 2015 I need to learn to vacation better! I concur on the ECCJ, those and the Tatuaje Cabiguans have in my opinion as close to a CC profile as one is going to find in a NCC.

dflan82 Posted July 30, 2015 Posted July 30, 2015 Great list of vacation smokes, Steve. I've been a big fan of the Illusione ECCJ 20th myself...such a great cigar! Still remains one of the best I've had his year (all 4 I've smoke have been excellent) 1

godpheonix Posted July 30, 2015 Author Posted July 30, 2015 Great list of vacation smokes, Steve. I've been a big fan of the Illusione ECCJ 20th myself...such a great cigar! Still remains one of the best I've had his year (all 4 I've smoke have been excellent) i agree. Don Giolito really makes some of the most interesting NC smokes in the business. i'm glad he's keeping it no bigger than a boutique size business. he really emphasises taste over power unlike most other NC cigar companies. the same goes for Litto Gomez for Dominicans, especially his Coronado and Litto Gomez line of cigars. just outstanding! but beware of the nicotine hit! hehe
godpheonix Posted July 30, 2015 Author Posted July 30, 2015 That is one hell of a vacation Great list and thank you for sharing! thanks Prez. and thank you for the cigars on that list! most of the CC's on the list were skillfully hand picked by you!!
