As for me, I'm packing ryj julietas and upmann half coronas for a round of house to house celebrations and a VR Unicos for some downtime tonight before going back on call tomorrow at the hospital.

Let the celebrations begin!

Eid Mubarak to all fellow muslim brothers and sisters of the leaf. I hope you had an easy month of Ramadhan full of family and prayers and also hope your day of Eid Ul Fitr is splendid surrounded by family and friends, and hopefully a few good cigars :) To those who are not Muslim, have a wonderful day all the same :) Me i'm going to be finally cracking into a BHK54. Got a box a while back but never tried one. I figure might as well, as good a time as any. Haven't had a smoke for almost 2 months so this should be a good way to get back into the swing of things :)

Today i'm going to briefly talk about a topic thats a bit controversial, but none the less will hopefully shed some light on various conflicts around the world in the muslim community. Fristly, there is a vast difference between "Islam" and what is the culture of the region in which Islam is prevalent. I wont get too much into it but one of my favourite authors is a guy named Mustafa Akyol. You can find some of his books on Amazon, but a quick overview can be seen in this TED video. http://www.ted.com/talks/mustafa_akyol_faith_versus_tradition_in_islam?language=en

One of the things for me, apart from the obvious socio-economic circumstances, that shows where the aggression seems to come out in the name of Islam, is through the Sects that have been formed within the religion. Firstly, creating sects is forbiden as stated in the Quran. Chapter 6 Sura An'am "As for those who divide their religion and break up into sects, thou hast no part in them in the least: their affair is with Allah: He will in the end tell them the truth of all that they did"

There are 2 main sects in Islam, Sunni and Shia. I won't go into what the differences are right now. 80% of the muslim world is Sunni, and the rest are Shia. Populations in countries like Indonesia are Sunni, while Shia's are predominantly in Iran, Iraq and Yemen. A further "offshoot" within the Sunni sect is Salafism, which is the dominant sect of the ruling family of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabian.

This sectarian violence in my opinion is what leads extremists to do what they do. Their fight is nothing to do with Islam, but purely out of a misguided notion that their particular version is better than someone elses. A while ago i read somewhere that islamic extremists kill 8 times more muslims than non-muslims! It seems to me the old addage is true. Some men, just want to see the world burn!

Hope some of this has been educational to you fine ladies and gentleman. Have a sensational day! I certainly will! Photos later on :)

In Malaysia the non-Muslims will wish our Muslim friends: "selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri" (safe celebration day of Ede) on a day like this.

At least that's how I remember it when I was growing up.

Well that happened but trust me there was still plenty of staring into smart phones happening too.

Shame mate! We're doing our visiting at the moment. Starting off with the families who's loved ones passed away through the last year and then to the normal family houses to settle down. I don't eat much. After a month of fasting I just can't stomach much. I just try and drink lots of water through the day.

Plans are still in line for all the cousins to catch up tonight after all the family stuff is out of the way. Got a few cigars picked out for lighting and the lighter is refuelled. The shisha pipe is cleaned and assembled and ready to pack a bowl of Rose Mint.

*I think your statement about the sectarian violence and so on was right on target. I disagree with the above stated put down of your observation. And yes - nothing worse that some jack-ass deciding that his (or her) definition of what and who God or the Supreme Diety is is the ONLY RIGHT one - and everyone else must be corrected. I like the way the 12 Steppers do it - "God as we understand Him" - and NOT forcing OUR definition of Him on others. Because in the end, it's just a way to take control of who's in power and running the show. My humble 2 cts.

So had the BHK 54. It was good. But not worth the price point I think.

I appreciate this post and wish you much happiness and peace. We in the U.S. can't really relate to this on multiple levels. Firstly, being a mostly Christian country our different Christian sects don't seek violence or revenge on other sects. Secondly, our overwhelming views of Islam and its sects are directly colored by the actions of the extremists. The Marine Barracks bombing, the 1993 Twin Tower bombing, the USS Cole, 9/11, Boston Marathon bombing etc... These events and the perceived lack of response from the moderate Muslim world to eliminate these types of people color our view of Islam in general. The only comparison I could make is if Right Wing militias decided to start attacking and killing all who didn't agree with their religious and political beliefs. A movement like that would be stamped out in about 2 seconds in the U.S.

However, having friends that have served at high levels in Iraq and Afghanistan the web of ethic, religious, political and socio-economic issues at play have been communicated to me as being mind boggling. My wish is that the people in the Middle East will at some point enjoy the comfort and peace that the vast majority of the Western world enjoys within the context of their strongly held religious beliefs. Blessings and good wishes to you LordAnubis.
