Shikar Posted June 14, 2015 Posted June 14, 2015 I don't recall smoking a heavily box pressed Cuban, like a box pressed NC. Why are box pressed CC uncommon? Nope, the CC in dress boxes that lose their round shape a little don't count. About a decade ago I used to enjoy NC and the box pressed Padron 1964 and Anejo Shark were my fav. Still have some aging in the cabinet. Kindly recommend me some box pressed CC, robusto size or similar please. Regards.
Habana Mike Posted June 14, 2015 Posted June 14, 2015 Habanos SA does not specifically produce box-pressed cigar. They do naturally occur in dress boxes, especially as they age. I've many Cubans that are as box-pressed as any other intentionally purpose-pressed cigar. For Robustos I suggest RASS, RyJ Wide Churchills and Boli RC 1
Rye Posted June 14, 2015 Posted June 14, 2015 Box pressed Cuban cigars are quite common. Ramon Allones Special Selecion are the first to come to mind. Also PSD4, Bolivar Royal Coronas, Saint Luis Rey Regios, etc.. Keep in mind, they are not vise pressed like many of the gimmicky NC sales tactics. 1
Colt45 Posted June 14, 2015 Posted June 14, 2015 Speaking generally - Cuban cigars become pressed ( to various degrees ) in dress boxes, by the pressure of the lid ( this is why Cubans in non dress boxes are "round" ). Most NCs which are box pressed are intentionally pressed prior to boxing, to create a "squared off" cigar. Personally. I prefer roung cigars. 3
Shikar Posted June 14, 2015 Author Posted June 14, 2015 Agree with above. I have some 7+ year old RASS that are box pressed, but only becos they are taking the shape of their storage dress box. I think you answered my question which is that the true "BOX PRESSED (in a vice)" CC don't really exist. Pity, as I like the shape variety. Regards.
Shikar Posted June 14, 2015 Author Posted June 14, 2015 BTW Cubans are becoming great at gimmicks like NC brethren. The last few years of unlimited regional/limited editions and banana sizes come to mind..... Regards.
Blakes Posted June 14, 2015 Posted June 14, 2015 I think you answered my question which is that the true "BOX PRESSED (in a vice)" CC don't really exist. Pity, as I like the shape variety. Regards. I've always understood it that "box pressed" cigars are pressed into their shape by the box as the name suggests and the NC "box pressed" cigars that are vice pressed have just decided to use the term 'box pressed' even though they don't really get their shape that way. 2
Habana Mike Posted June 15, 2015 Posted June 15, 2015 That's pretty much what I was attempting to convey, that Cuba does not purposely "vice-press" cigars per the OP's point regarding that cigars that are pressed out of round by the box don't count. Your observation about Cuba rewriting their playbook rings true and we may see "vice-pressed" cigars before you know it! 1
ehdg Posted June 15, 2015 Posted June 15, 2015 Personally I've never found any PSD4's to be bix pressed. If you'd like a box press cigar you might try a VR Famoso. Those can be box pressed from time to time.
maxcjs0101 Posted June 15, 2015 Posted June 15, 2015 I prefer rounded cigars but a little box press shape from the dress box is fine by me. Im not sure if there's any specifically box pressed cigars by habanos SA though.
Dimmers Posted June 15, 2015 Posted June 15, 2015 Are we talking aesthetics ? Does an 'intentionally- rolled/boxed' so called boxed-pressed cigar impart a differing smoking experience (regarding these specific NC's the OP mentioned) ?
Onelove Posted June 15, 2015 Posted June 15, 2015 Is there a correlation between the firmer draw we all love in Cubans and less box press? i.e. more tobacco in the same area so they resist it a little better.
nikesupremedunk Posted June 15, 2015 Posted June 15, 2015 I think the skinnier cigars in DB's suffer from this more. Lonsdales, Laguito 1's, etc. Personally I am not a fan of the box pressed cigars, but sometimes that's the only way it comes so I have no choice. Although I suppose if they are not square enough for your taste you could always add more "press" to them by putting some cider blocks on top.
bbguardsp Posted June 16, 2015 Posted June 16, 2015 Generally the factory pressed noncubans have a leaf of filler removed to compensate for potential draw problems.
