Seeking suggestions for the first Box purchase

Recommended Posts

Gents,

I realize that I'm opening up a can of worms here, but here it goes:

What would be your recommendation for a first box to be purchased? (I did get a box of Monte #2 the other day from the 24:24, but that doesn't count, it was an impulse decision)

Converting over from the NC world, consider AF Anejo, Shorty Story, Flor de Las Antillas and Curivari Buenaventura as some of my favorite NC cigars so far.

Really hoping to get somewhat of a consensus, and not 25 different cigars from 25 responses smile.png

EDIT: I also would like to be able to smoke them soon, so please do not suggest something that needs aging to be enjoyed

Alex

That's exactly what you're going to get.

Having boxes aint like having kids, you cant just have one or two. You gotta plan for having a few boxes, a cooler's worth. Plan your purchases, plan your finances, plan your risks (mold, bugs, disl

Because I can't stay away from this forum and from drooling over Rob's daily specials???

Ask Rob (our host) to send you a sampler. If you're looking for one specific box to be requested, you will indeed get almost every cigar mentioned and be no better off than you are now on what to buy.

If boxes is what you're truly after, grab a few 10 counts: PSD4, Hoyo EE, Monte PE & Upmann Mag 50 would be good places to start.

Love the Anejo and the Antillas. Also any Liga Privada..

As far as NC goes, I assume you haven't tried many and with that assumption I offer this answer which has been passed down to me.

When starting out (and I am still new to CC's) it was suggested to me not to worry about boxes and aging and all those good things that come in good time.

Instead, being new I need to learn what I like and don't like before I worry about long term solutions like buying boxes and aging cigars. It was suggested to buy a bunch of singles of a bunch of different brands so I can discover what kind of profiles and characteristics I like in a cigar.

Because almost everyone will argue that CC's are not anything like a NC's so you cant pick out a CC based on the NC's that you like... Take your time and find out what your preferences are.

Or by all means by all the boxes you can!! party.gif I understand the urge to buy!!

let me add a small caveat to this: one of the qualifying factors should be the ability to enjoy it young, and not park it the wineador for 2 years.

I already have a sampler that I got just prior to joining this forum, but I'm afraid I need to sit on it for at least a month (it spent 3 weeks in transit). The problem is that there is no way in hell I'll be able to resist purchasing something in the meantime, especially with all these great 24:24 deals I've been seeing.

So I guess I'm trying to pretend that I'm making "intelligent decisions"... :)

Honeslty, Each cuban marca has something different to offer. Get one of the awesome sampler packs the boss here has put together to get a feel of what you like and then commit to boxes from there. thats my two cents. Enjoy the slippery slope

sampler sampler sampler. dont buy bases on others tastes just to find out you don't like certain flavor profiles. this also helps with you develope pantience which is a major requirement in this hobby. Just my two cents for what it's worth.

Monte 2's were a good start. Check out the reviews by Rob and Ken. Entertaining yet informative.

I am just kind of new to Cubans also and I found that if I get a sampler I get two or three of each from here on out. It's funny what a few months rest will do for taste. My first Bolivar Corona Junior was harsh and way too over powering 4months later and a complete joy to smoke. Make sure you get a couple Siglo IV's and give them at least six months. Just my opinion, like I said I'm pretty new around here too.

I thought I saw in quite few posts here that RA usually require aging?

Is that not true?

Also I forgot about this. I do advise grabbing a sampler or two as I stated before, or just picking out a bunch of singles like I have been doing, but here is a list of sticks that was reccomended to me by Rob based on quality, diverse array of Cuban profiles, and the ability to smoke after a 30 day rest in the humidor.

1. Upmann Connoisseur A
2. Bolivar Royal Corona
3. Quai D’Orsay Corona
4. Punch Punch
5. Romeo y Julieta Wide Churchill
6. Cohiba Robusto
7. Saint Luis Rey Serie A
8. Ramon Allones Specially Select
9. Partagas Serie D number 4
10. Saint Luis Rey Regio
11. Montecristo Number 2
12. Vegas Robaina Unicos
13. Diplomatico Number 2

IMO you should be thinking about trying benchmark Cuban cigars. You should hit the biggies first so you can get an understanding of the basic range of flavors. After you have experience with those cigars you can start to diversify into the flavors that you find most enjoyable. It is a great journey, I hope you enjoy yourself!!

For the Specially Select and Gigantes, I would personally answer a resounding YES, they need aging. I won't touch a SS without 2 years from boxdate and a Gig without 3+ years - they're just muddled and harsh otherwise, in my experience. And I'm not one of those who have the space to age everything. The Superiores has been an exception to the RA aging rule I impose upon myself - they've been ggrrrrrrrrrrrreat after a short acclimation period (3-6 months).

The Small Club Coronas available seem to be a little older - ordered blind and received a 2012 about 6 months ago. This is one way around the aging dilemma.

That's what I was trying to avoid - an order for the box of PL Encantos was placed 20 min ago sad.png

See? That's another solution! The PL Encantos are amazing smokes (as are the rapidly disappearing Robustos RE from 2007) and you're getting them with some decent time on them already.

Another cigar I forgot to mention was the H Upmann Connie #1 - for some reason, most "current" stock is already 2-3 years old. Why? I don't know, but they are good now with plenty of legs left in case you want to see what aging does to them.

A sampler or singles are a great way to try different cigars. If they're bought from a good source (like our host), you can try them new. If they're harsh and the flavors/aromas are muddled, you'll know you should have waited! I would recommend getting 2 of each single - one to try to see if it needs aging and another to try down the road!

Reading reviews is also helpful to see how long people are waiting to smoke them and how they are performing.
