Half wheel was good before it became half wheel. Now it focuses on NCs mainly..

So, it seems that there really is no Cuban only printed periodical resource. Personally, I also have no issue with CA - they provide many great cigar related (including Cuban) articles that I might not find elsewhere. I've seen some of the mentioned mags / blogs, and took a look at some mentioned here I'd not already seen. Not a whole lot of difference to me - similar ads, similar content. As far as I'm concerned, reviews from any source, including our forum - should simply be utilized as a guideline, perhaps taken in aggregate.

I think Khalil has basically hit the nail on the head. Read any mag, blog, forum - again including ours - and use what works for you, without blinders....

Cigarjournal is a good read, and wall to wall cigars and cigar related articles. However, their ratings of cigars are as laughable as CA now. Which is sad really.

Keith.

Agreed! I do like some NCs but I think it was 2013 the cigar of the year was rated a 96 I tried several and IMHO I might have given it an 80

I sent an e-mail to Cigar Journal editor a month ago and had no reply. Different from other times.

But my e-mail was different as well. For the first time I criticized the magazine saying that it was not the same anymore and things like that. And for the first time I had no reply.

For sure there is something different there nowadays.

But, yes, I still think it's the best cigar magazine. And I will gladly renew my subscription next month.

FOH!

Seriously, I wonder what it would have been like to be into cigars before the internet...

For an average American? Blind luck..

For everyone else? Pure bliss

I hear you. It sounds like you are at a crossroads that others have found themselves, myself included.

I've stepped in that dark land but I've decided to come back.

For me, what worked was the fact that what I knew could help those new to the hobby. Also, I have colleagues with whom I can have reasoned, critical discussions about even the most sacred of Habanos folklore. That and participating in some truly stimulating tasting experiences.

Or perhaps you've just tired of the online cigars scene. Understandable. Many formerly vibrant forums have become ghost towns. To that, and about FOH, I say never. Not as long as I'm a member.

Wilkey

PS. Yes to Cigar Journal and yes also to Cigar Magazine...which I think was the best NC magazine.

I quoted my friend here because I think what he wrote is worth rereading and truly understanding.

I too have seen many an old goat like myself put themselves out to pasture. There are a plethora of reasons and a waning personal interest is the most common. That unfortunately cannot be stopped.

What we can stop is the snobbishness and cliques, and a lot of the collector mentality hierarchal stratifying that breaks up other communities and I think that is what I see as most inspiring out of Wilkey's post. Yes, I have superposed my meaning on his statement, and while he may not have said exactly what I said, and meant exactly what I meant, his comment about mentoring and helping new smokers is not only personally rewarding and heartwarming it is a necessity to our survival as a species!

You must embrace new smokers and make them feel at home or we will all die as a part of collateral damage caused by the freedom hating nanny state.

Interest in cigars is where you find it. Smoking them, critiquing them, writing about them, hell, even collecting them is better than working against them... Me, I cannot stand CA and generally deride them on any occassion! But, they are a magazine still showing and advertising cigars. I am surprised that they are not mandated to have a plain cover like a porno mag at this stage. They must take a position and raise money with it or they too will die. Understanding their position and having empathy for it is a part of understanding tobacco products today. The deck is stacked against us.

Cheers! -Piggy
