leftimatic
So some of you may or may not know but Jack Bruce just died. He was a hell of a bassist we all know that. Add Ginger and Clapton and nothing short of amazing. Before him was Johnny Winter, Johnny Cash, J.J. Cale, Alvin Lee, George Jones,1/2 the Beatles, Chris Gaffeny, all of the Ramones, Lou Reed, Willie P Bennett, Jerry Garcia, and countless others. Problem is these guys and gals are getting old. Plain and simple and so am I. My music tastes haven't changed a whole lot but the sounds around me have. There are a few new bands to take the stage but none touch the soul quite the same way. Now I don't get out much anymore and I am sure there are some great acts out there waiting for me to hear them. Does anyone have some new heroes to take their places or will just empty saddles remain? Some bands I tend to lean to but no means of an indication of tastes. I am a bit of a musician singer songwriter so my palette is always open to new flavours. Mostly underdogs and unknowns the real heros. Southern Culture on the Skids The Derailers J.D. Mcpherson The Supersuckers Shooter Jennings Headstones Hacienda Brothers Hayes Carll Susan Tedeschi Neko Case Fred Eaglesmith The Sadies Blue Rodeo Blackie and the Rodeo Kings Motorhead http://youtu.be/K_Q-pDPvaaQ So... Colt45
The first that pops into mind is Dave Grohl. I'm not the biggest Foo Fighters fan, nor was I big into Nirvana, and I don't consider him a "hero" - but I think he fits the bill in many ways..... leftimatic
David Grohl has the longevity factor for sure. yah never been big on him though. Watched a Lemmy documentary and he may as well of been sucking Lemmy's ****. A bit of a suck up and sell out in my opinion.
cpmurrin
Lucero, Jason Isbell, Sturgil Simpson on the alt country/americana side. Flaming Lips are a fav but have been around for awhile. Tame Impala from Oz. Beach House from Baltimore. Phantogram. There are a lot of great bands out there but you really need to look to break clear of the dinosaurs and top 40. Saw Isbell earlier this month and he was great, seeing Lucero and Tame Impala next month. Good luck!
leftimatic
Sturgill is a good find for sure. Reminds me of Waylon, keeping the backbone in country. He's on the list.

jabster
As a guitarist, with heaving leanings to blues and rock. Gary Clark jr may tick the box.

rodrigodeanda
Porcupine Tree They are not new at all but personally I consider them my heroes and I think they are not that well known. The vocalist/songwriter have a couple of bans that are pretty good too: Blackfield, No-Man, I.E.M. and also he's produced 3 solo albums that are really good to listen to, specially the album called Insurgentes. Susan Tedeschis' beau Derek Trucks is a phenomenal guitarist. Warren Haynes is in that same group with any of his projects my favorite of them being Govt Mule. He and Derek have both certainly given The Allman Brothers a boost. Sad to see all these legends slowly moving on to the next gig.

Such a huge door gets opened when you pull up a few names. You tube is a great way to loose a couple hours chasing these guys around. I guess I jumped the gun on thinking all the heroes were gone.
