2013/2014 have been sensational.

You need to get the right box with stunning thin oily/sheen wrappers. Avoid pale wrappers with no sheen.

In my opinion, the most underrated cigar today.

I may have to rethink these with all the positive feedback. Next HQ box of 10 I'll be on. The last I had a few was in 2011 I believe, and have stayed away for the most part due to the lack of flavor, IMO. Nice to hear some good things now.

Weakest of the whole Upmann lineup in my experience. I try one every now and then to remind me.

Any idea which box codes could be safe to buy blind from 2013-14?

Had one around lunchtime today with an Australian vsop brandy.

Apricot cream brulé with hints of vanilla.

Built up to solid medium after s gorgeous gentle beginning.

Fantastic cigar from a box born in April 2014.ESO ABR 14.

Then again I'm a fan of HUpmann Connie 1 with some age. They have some more kick than the Mag 50's..

by coincidence, i had one from 2008 last night. loved it.

had it with a Jack Daniel 'Rested' Tennessee Rye Batch 2. love to know if anyone knows much about this. i have been enjoying it but it has the most curious strong banana aroma.

anyway, i have put my notes for last year, and last night, below. i think they need some time to come around. i had an odd impression that i had not really been enjoying them. clearly i have no idea of my own mind, from the notes. forgive the notes - often make jottings to myself.

i do remember the one in Colmar at the hotel. outside was the smoking area and i was one of several enkjoying it, though the only one with a cigar. and a G&T, if i recall. it was during the world cup so they had a big tv for us.

then this complete tosser turns up, dressed like he can't decide if he is exploring the amazon or the sahara and walks through the area - it was near the entrance to the hotel - waving his hat like mad to get rid of my smoke. which he deliberately walked into. he was with his wife and daughter and i felt so sorry for them, stuck with him for life. he then makes at least 6 or 7 trips through the area over about 20 minutes, all with the obvious intent of attempting to embarrass me (good luck). so i would wait till i saw him coming and make sure i had plenty of smoke to blow his way. to top it off, next morning i walk out of the hotel and there is his daughter puffing away.

EMA May 08.

9/5/14 – at home. This was a really lovely smoke, probably the best of the box so far. Really chocolatey. Had some re-lighting issues towards the end but otherwise, gorgeous. perfect now. (94).

15/June/14. – Paris. mag 50. lovely. sweet to kick off and that moved to lovely creamy notes and then more earthy rich flavour. Terrific. 92

22nd – in Colmar at the hotel outside (with grumpy man still walking past regularly waving his hat to save himself from dying). Watched end of arg v Iran (doubts re messi? stepped up with a cracker when needed) and Germany v Ghana (what a great match) with bunch of Germans and an Upmann mag 50. Whacko this was a really lovely dense creamy cigar. great flavours all through. some complexity. touch hot at the end. wish i had brought more with me. 93.

Oct 2014 - One at Fraser? But no idea hat i thought???

8/5/15 – at home. Delightful smoke. These have really come into their own over the last year. Creamy coffee, caramel. A mellow yet complex smoke. Only issue was that it was one of those very rare smokes which burnt right down the centre for ages before emerging. And that threw off the burn for the rest of it. Otherwise, loved it. 92 (more if not for the burn issues).

I love Rye Whiskey Ken and have been lucky to be able to source some from the States. The Rested Rye from JD is an unaged white dog. Do you generally like this stuff? I was in Kentucky last week and brought home a bottle of Buffalo Trace Rye (unaged) to compare to stuff I'm making myself.

Rye is good stuff, get some Rittenhouse, knob Creek Rye or any of the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection Ryes. Fantastic stuff!

Ken, I have never had the JD Rested Rye, but I remember my local liquor shop manager telling me that it was a limited release to show fans of JD Rye what it tasted like after two years in the barrel (which apparently is the minimum amount of time required to call it a rye whiskey). It is not supposed to be as intense as a rye with more barrel age time, but will at least show you where that particular batch is headed. Hope you enjoyed it...that banana note sounds very interesting.

If you ever get a chance, try A Midwinter Nights Dram from High West Distillery. It is finished in French oak and port barrels which give it a very full flavor with slight oak and a blast of dark fruit flavor on the finish. Drink it alone or pair with a cigar, either is magnificent.

Cheers,

Dan

Dan, I just home from a US trip and I was looking all over for this! Love me some Rendesvous Rye, which we can actually get over here.

The Midwinter Nights Dram is released seasonally from what I can tell in the U.S. (Winter, go figure) but pretty much all of the High West Whiskies that I have tried are good and the Redesvous is exceptional. Not sure what the distribution is there but I will see if I can find out.
