ogus Posted August 23, 2014 Posted August 23, 2014 Is there an advantage of cabinets of 50 Partagas shorts? Any reason this is preferred over two 25 boxes?
LeafLover Posted August 23, 2014 Posted August 23, 2014 IMO, I prefer storing in cabs. So I'll buy dress boxes and put them in cabs. Having said that, if a whole 50 cab sucks ass, thats a lot of cigars that I would be unhappy with. So if I bought two dress boxes then, in my logic, there would be leas of a chance that both boxes would suck ass. Then I'll just transfer then both to cabs. My logic, and I'm sure there are folks out there who will raise their eyebrows. I do not think rollers say, put the better cigars in dress boxes.
Tino Posted August 23, 2014 Posted August 23, 2014 You can do this with a cab! Ultimately depends what's in the boxes/cabs but plenty of people prefer cabs and the cigar on cigar contact
potpest Posted August 23, 2014 Posted August 23, 2014 There's also no box press, in case your OCD and you need your cigars to be round. Cabs are considered better for aging, as has been mentioned cigar on cigar contact and also they tend to be more sealed in their own environment better than in a box.

If your rotation is limited to 3 or 4 cigars, and the box is smoked within a few months, it has absolutely no importance. But, if like me you have a large rotation, and you smoke less of 1 of a particular cigar every month, the cigars will age more gracefully in a cab (the "magnum" effect: the more cigars in the bunch, the better they age). 4

ogus Posted August 23, 2014 Author Posted August 23, 2014 thanks all for the illuminating and colorful comments
Smallclub Posted August 23, 2014 Posted August 23, 2014 They look cooler. That is all. Precisely, no. And for the record, according to several vendors and many smokers, the recent RASS in cab 50 is much better than the dress box version, when theorically there shouldn't be a difference.
subport Posted August 23, 2014 Posted August 23, 2014 everything was said before. cab for sure. not because they look cooler, however they do. 1
PapaDisco Posted August 23, 2014 Posted August 23, 2014 I am also of the opinion that cabs are better for aging and longer term storage. There's less air circulation, more tobacco to tobacco contact, it's all wood and no cardboard. The opening area (the lid) of a cab is much smaller than on a similar sized dress box.
nick2021 Posted August 23, 2014 Posted August 23, 2014 All points seemed to have been addressed above…..I like having cabs for long term aging as I have a large rotation as well. A shame it's hard to find some cigars in a cab format!
TheGipper Posted August 23, 2014 Posted August 23, 2014 Cabs = best long term aging, 5+ years (tubos also) Dress boxes = Smoke 'em now or age 'em Cardboard packs = smoke 'em now or take them out I'm surprised at how bad sticks age in cardboard packs. Even the handful I vacuum sealed as an experiment 5-6 years ago taste bland and papery now. I discard the cardboard pack packaging immediately now. One thing I've done with some dress boxes to long term age (sizes I have no cabinets for) is to add a wood divider from another box on the top (and the very bottom if I have two extra). Seems to help a bit. Bottom line is, dress boxes do fine for long term aging also. Just not as good as cabs. I'm beginning to think it isn't so much that the wood is helpful as much as ink-printed/bleach-treated paper is harmful to flavors. I think the (non spanish cedar) wood is largely neutral, unless we're talking about spanish cedar (like the Romeo Cedros wraps and the Quai d'Orsay cedar tops). With that type of wood, I actually get a cedary flavor in the cigars.
santela Posted August 23, 2014 Posted August 23, 2014 I have found that dress boxes are more likely to have mold, not sure why, but that's been my experience.
TheLiquidGator Posted August 24, 2014 Posted August 24, 2014 I cannot stand the "little nail" that holds down the top of a dress box. Nothing but a bloody pain. For that reason alone, and there are others, CAB.
Firebender Posted August 24, 2014 Posted August 24, 2014 SLB have some air space in the boxes vs. tightly packed dress box; better for aging. I strongly prefer round cigars over box pressed. That being said I wish they produce all petite coronas in 25ct SLBS..
