Just found that an ERDM Choix Supreme in my humi has a cracked wrapper-

I'm guessing it's a bad thing, but I'm not sure why.... Will it make any difference?

It may affect the burn. I've had cracked wrappers (at the foot especially) cause skew-whiff burns.

Also, it may be an indication of the cigar being held in poor conditions (might be too dry or even moving from too humid to too dry quickly causing a crack) which may cause problems as well.

Most of the time it shouldn't be a problem at all though!

Only one way to find out cigar.gif

WHAT !?!?!? YOU CRACKED YOUR CIGAR WRAPPERS!?!?! THEY ARE RUINED NOW!!!!

Sorry, jsut kidding tongue.png

Generally cracked wrappers are from a cigar at low humidty being put into a high humidity humidor and then the insides expand a bit and crack the wrapper. Scratch that.

If the crack is on the foot, then it wont effect smoking really. Sometimes while smoking you need to put some spit on the base of the crack to prevent it crackign more as your smoking the cigar.

A cracked wrapper in the top end does wreck the draw

Pectin glue, a bit of wrapper from another cigar you didn't care for (bad taste, plugged or other) and voila!

Of course, it gets trickier if the binder is damaged...

To clarify, on the tip of the crack. The part farthest from the open end of the crack or split. Doesn't always help as the cigar will swell a bit as it is smoked and you are handling it so a crack in a delicate wrapper is likely to just keep on going. If it's a double-ended crack in the middle of the cigar barrel away from the burning end, well, those don't usually end well as you'll have pull along the girth and tangential unwrapping forces as well.

In theory, a good approach. In practice, too much work for a daily smoke. I just dab saliva or keep my finger on the crack tip until the burn progresses past it then you're in the clear.

If you feel wind-tunneling due to a badly split wrapper, then generally it's a lost cause. In those cases I'll just peel the wrapper off entirely (again, especially so if it is a thin or delicate wrapper) and smoke the binder-wrapped remainder.

As other posters have said, it depends. And it is certainly true that the effect can range from none to little, all the way to a significant degradation of the smoking and sensory experience.

Wilkey

X2 I use this method quite often and it works great on even seriously damaged wrappers.

I live in a log home in the forest. I have to come up with solutions for stuff with things on hand.

We use the tiniest bit of honey for damaged wrappers. Works like a charm.

Oh Andrew... You have so much to learn happy.png

Today i smoked this:eduzyny3.jpg

Started off difficult. I took a chance as sometimes the wrapper CAN continue to break down the cigar as the foot expands:

Lucky, it turned out perfectly!!

Tasted just fine, too! ^_^

Had a Bolivar Simones today.
My mouth now tastes like cotton candy. Smokey, brilliant, cotton candy. Yum.

Mr Maplepie, an unrelated question. Can you tell me what sort if glue or adhesive you used to stick the labels to your travel case that's in the background of a few of your pics?

Cheers

Gluestick. Think it was Elmers brand.

Cost me a buck fifty for one as they come in packs of 4.

Did it drunk one night at 4am. Turned out to not be bad. Very helpful to know which Cigar Caddy is mine.

That's so true - and I'm learning quickly!

Used a bit of saliva and it did the trick wonderfully!

Bloody gorgeous stick. Smoked it down to the last inch and a half - then had to take the wrapper off and smoked to the last inch.... all good :-D
