Popular Post CaptainQuintero
I'm not one for public displays of emotion but this year is the last time most veteran societies are organising ceremonies due to the advanced age of it's members. Thoughts going out to all the people who took part up front and behind the scenes. And a special thought to the soldiers of the former soviet union; remember that D-Day was devised to take the pressure off the soviet union who had been under the full force of the axis for 3 years at that point. Our history books might have been heavily edited to take away the importance of your actions and our media won't give any mention to the sacrifice but the everyday people of our nations hold incredible gratitude to the 25million soldiers of the USSR who died in WW2, not just the traditional allies. A solemn thank you to all the men and women of all nations who fought regardless of nation, sex, creed or colour.

LordAnubis
Indeed, lest we forget the falling of the USSR men and women and also the Chinese. As with all of history, we need not to remember it, but to learn from the tragedies that fell upon the men and women who preceeded us and ensure they do not get repeated. Unfortunately, humanity does not easily learn from its own mistakes.

Pedro2486
Well said everyone What strikes me the hardest is the fact that the youngest of these fine men are in their mid eighties. Like the heros of the First World War, their passing will sound the end of an era. An era we as a people should be taking every opportunity to learn from and about. They went with songs to the battle, they were young. Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow. They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted, They fell with their faces to the foe. They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, We will remember them. They mingle not with their laughing comrades again; They sit no more at familiar tables of home; They have no lot in our labour of the day-time; They sleep beyond England's foam. Lest we Forget

Big thing on TV recently - the boys who jumped in during d day, who are at least in their mid to late 80's. Still remember the stories my teachers - most of them vets of WW2 - would tell... they are, indeed, the greatest generation. We should never forget WHY they fought, and that they won. Those who have gone, I miss them terribly. They who are still with us... God bless them, and grant them continued good health, wonderful comraderie, and many, many more years!
