CaptainQuintero Posted May 6, 2014 Posted May 6, 2014 My first Piedra (a petit cazadorez) for many years due to trusted friends saying how excellent they have been these past couple of years. Straight away rich fruity tobacco, more spice compared to the Quintero sweetness but still there was some sweetness. Then around 8 draws in:
alloy Posted May 6, 2014 Posted May 6, 2014 Don't you just hate tar? I was smoking an 11 Mons dalia and halfway through it started tating that bitter cedar and tar was bubbling out the end. The rest of my Mons sit in my wineador since then. But I'm curious (or an idiot), what causes this?
Puros Y Vino Posted May 6, 2014 Posted May 6, 2014 Not sure what causes it. I did have two cigars experience it in a row. A Monte 4 and a QdO Corona. I clipped a bit lower and the problem went away. The only thing in common I've experienced. I've smoked the cigar in a somewhat cold environment. 10 - 12C. Can't say that's the cause though. Tar buildup is probably caused by a stem in the cigar that still has some juice left.
Wallbright Posted May 6, 2014 Posted May 6, 2014 That blows. I can honestly say I've never had any tar build up on a cigar but maybe I'm just the exception. The JLPs are good for being so cheap but they are far from stellar in the construction department, as you probably know. 2010s are smoking really well right now. 1
earthson Posted May 6, 2014 Posted May 6, 2014 I assume it's moisture from a stem that hasn't cured out yet. More common in younger, thinner RG cigars, esp. NCs.
Marker Posted May 6, 2014 Posted May 6, 2014 Liga Privadas do this a lot. Friends smoking them almost always complain about the tar in the head. I can't stand them for a few reasons but that is one. Never seen so much tar in a cigar until I smoked a T52 and a few undercrowns. I have had it happen on an AF short story. Not much else. I agree that it might be a stem with still oil/moisture left in it. That pops and goop gets sucked to the head (twss) and thar she blows. Clipping it down does work as Frank stated. I would rather not have that in my mouth so if it happens I clip until it is gone or it is a lost cause.
ChanceSchmerr Posted May 6, 2014 Posted May 6, 2014 I get this once every 15-20 cigars or so. Same as Frank, I clip down and no worries. Happens to a wide range of CC's - everything from Boli to QdO, Party to SLR. No long-term impact to flavour after the clip down - it's actually why I usually don't take a deep clip from my Palio to begin with - just in case something like this occurs!
AndrewNR Posted May 6, 2014 Posted May 6, 2014 Light coloured oil/tar? Fascinating.. Yet to encounter this thankfully
Oscar300 Posted May 6, 2014 Posted May 6, 2014 I had it with a punched coro a few weeks back. Clipped it and the problem went away, tasted great!
Cohiba Stevie Posted May 6, 2014 Posted May 6, 2014 I think it happens more as you have a narrower draw like on pyramides or those that have been cut with a punch. However you have quite an open cut there CQ. Strange.
Guest rob Posted May 6, 2014 Posted May 6, 2014 Weird. I've been smoking cigars regularly for 15 years, and never seen it in a cigar I've smoked. I wonder what specific conditions are required for it to occur.
CaptainQuintero Posted May 6, 2014 Author Posted May 6, 2014 It's the first time I have ever experienced it, definitely a little disconcerting! This type of thing wouldn't happen with a Quintero
Rye Posted May 7, 2014 Posted May 7, 2014 That happened to myself and a friend with the FDC Grandiosos during the Super Bowl this past winter. Two other friends didn't have the issue with theirs. It doesn't happen to me lots, but it's gross when it does.
maxcjs0101 Posted May 7, 2014 Posted May 7, 2014 It did happen to me on a Brazilian stick i had. Didnt know at that time the solution was to clip it further down..
