wiztek Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 Hi everyone, I am new to smoking cigars. The only cigars i have smoked are the RyJ No.2's, and i enjoyed them. I am looking to purchase a box of 10 RyJ Short Churchill's on a recommendation. I don't have a humidor. Is the Short Churchill a good cigar to 'start' on, and what happens once i unseal the box? How long before the cigars go off? Thanks Cameron
Maplepie Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 Honestly, within 3 days. What I'd do is just get one of those clasping tupperware sealers. That turns it from a tupperware container to a tupperdore! Sent from my BlackBerry Q10 using Tapatalk for Android.
srbbones Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 You really need a way to re-hydrate the cigars a bit after they arrive. They you need to keep then humidified, or else they will degrade in quality. You might want to invest in a small humidor and some boveda bags to start.
oldirtyewok Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 As others have said... A makeshift humidor is where you would want to start. On the cheap would be to go the cooler route (coolidor). A simple airtight cooler (doesn't need to be fancy with wheels and such, but the bigger the better for you down the road.). Some boveda packs and you're set to start populating without having to worry too much.
CaptainQuintero Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 Depending where you live (humidity) you could be fine never needing a humidor. If you are just buying a 10 count box then double bagging the box with zip-lock bags should keep you fine for at least a month or two. (A cigar a week and you're fine) Alternatively just put each single cigar in a zip lock bag with the air pushed out of its own and they will be fine for a good while, that's all a tubed cigar essentially is 1
oldirtyewok Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 Great advice.. Lots of options, ultimately decision is yours
wiztek Posted April 3, 2014 Author Posted April 3, 2014 Ziplock bag solution sounds the easiest. I live in Sydney, Australia, so not too dry. I plan to take a few with me overseas so ziplog back solution will work for that. I will probably buy a humidor while im overseas So if not the Churchills, can anyone make any other recommendations? After something relatively cheap, if possible.

Pedro2486 Posted April 3, 2014 Posted April 3, 2014 Dude if your in Sydney go grab some bovedas or a xicar jar from a divan and grab a Tupperware or similar box. You'll be golden 1
coug28 Posted April 3, 2014 Posted April 3, 2014 For other alternatives to the RyJ Short, grab a 10 count box of PSD4s or Monte Petit Edmundos. Or just grab a Robusto sampler from our hosts here and find which marca floats your boat.
fookite Posted April 3, 2014 Posted April 3, 2014 Another option is a jar, acrylic or glass, with some kind of seal. I got one for ten bucks at the Container Store that I threw a Boveda and a box of Party Shorts in, for my desk at work.
canadianbeaver Posted April 3, 2014 Posted April 3, 2014 Like some of the others, I always had a bias against RyJ short Churchills, or any RyJ's for that matter other than Cazadores. Recently, however, I bought a box of 15 short Churchill tubos. These come as 5 boxes of 3 tubes, so they are very self contained and would do well in a Tupperware box or ziplock bag. And they smoke beautifully right out of the mail for flavour and lots of beautiful, puffy smoke.
Firebender Posted April 3, 2014 Posted April 3, 2014 i think the short churchills are crappy Exactly. Try something else like Hoyo Epi2 or JL2
Pedro2486 Posted April 3, 2014 Posted April 3, 2014 Exactly. Try something else like Hoyo Epi2 or JL2 Agree. Not trying to disparage your choice at all and I know the Aussie prices are harsh but some HdM epicure 2s would be a great choice for a first box buy. I would, indeed I have, grab them first and then the RyJ short Churchill second
subport Posted April 3, 2014 Posted April 3, 2014 Just because its crappy for you might be an okay start for him. Anyway it supposed to be his journey and experience to find what he really likes himself. Imho Plastic container and boveda could not hurt that much. Easy and safe 2
rmill3r Posted April 3, 2014 Posted April 3, 2014 Never had an RyJ and I'm interested in trying that one myself. If you are looking for some other recommendations, though, my first box purchase (which I recently made) was HdM epi2. So very good. Mostly medium with rich, creamy nutty and strong coffee notes. I even picked up minty and rye notes--a really unusual cigar for me. I'm interested in some light/mild/creamy morning type smokes as well, though, and I hear RyJs might just be the way to go.

After something relatively cheap, if possible. If you liked the RyJ piramides then you will most likely like the short churchills too, they are a little sweeter. Alternatively the Exhibition #4 have been excellent in 2013 so that would be a good choice too. If you liked RyJ, stick with it!
Lotusguy Posted April 3, 2014 Posted April 3, 2014 Don't listen to the haters - I love the Short Churchills and always have some around. My favorite RyJ after the Cazadores.
MrDowse Posted April 3, 2014 Posted April 3, 2014 Don't listen to the haters - I love the Short Churchills and always have some around. x2. Smoked a cracking one tonight.
Hemsworth Posted April 3, 2014 Posted April 3, 2014 I have had exactly ONE Short Churchill. It was a wonderful cigar. My first time tasting cherry notes in a cigar. My next box will be RyJ something...just not sure yet.
Jimmy2 Posted April 3, 2014 Posted April 3, 2014 If you get a box that is blended perfect young or aged you will be rewarded with spicy layers of fruit floral madness ! Same goes for Bolivar RC , Hoyo Epi2 and JL Sel2 the ones I sampled were all 2013 and have been outstanding !!! Just Marvelous !! But of course they all have different flavor profiles . I have just come back from a couple of years break from the cigar scene and I must say I am glad I am back !! 1
stunod Posted April 3, 2014 Posted April 3, 2014 i think the short churchills are crappy No, tell us how you really think. Lol
