Florida is hot . . . clearly smoking a cigar will make us feel better.

Greetings Habanonites (is that a thing?),

I'm from Florida where it's hot and humid and we're relatively geographically close to Cuba. I've been enjoying cigars for a quite a long time, but I would say that it's only been the past year that I've come to "seriously" enjoy cigars as a hobby. Being an American, it started out with a love largely for NCs. Oliva V was the first one I truly considered a favorite, then it became Arturo Fuente, Drew Estate, Crowned Heads, yadda, yadda, yadda . . . .

While I've had Cubans in the past, it wasn't until recently that I've been able to try more and try them more frequently. I remember the first one I had; it was in high school with a buddy whose family went to the Bahamas every other year, and he always came back with a handle of rum and "Cubans" to share. While it was certainly dark out, I seem to remember the wrapper being particularly dark, like black as the night. Looking back, I'm not sure what we were smoking that night, but regardless of its authenticity, it brought me closer to my friend and still managed to spark a love for cigars within me. Real or not, that is the power of tobacco. The company we shared was great--the discussion was riveting. That was all that mattered.

I'm coming here to Friends of Habanos, because I've found a real knack for CCs that was never quite satisfied in other areas of the cigar industry. I think the closest I've ever gotten in an NC has been the Hemingway line, but nothing has so strongly stuck in my memory as the first time I tried a Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure No. 2 or the Bolivar Belicosos Finos. Unlike other cigars, these were experiences that flipped my world upside down, so now I'm eager to learn and know more and eventually give back as well.

Other than cigars, I'm really into music--all sorts of music. I like headbanging to metal as much as I love some good jazz, classical, and soul-searching blues. I'm a dedicated writer and that is essentially the aim of my professional life as well. I enjoy reading and collecting books, and another hobby of mine that goes right along with this one is whisky, my main haunts being single malts and bourbon!

I'm willing to bet I'm one of the younger members on this site at the moment, but I'm coming to this community because I want good, informative discussion and I have been referred here by a number of people whose judgment I hold highly. So I've been scouring the forums for a little over a month and watching the always entertaining YouTube reviews as well. I'm loving what I'm seeing and can't wait to see more.

Sorry for the above essay, but I'll just finish this out with my current favorites (so that I can one day come back to this post and laugh at myself) and then get back to reading . . .

- Arturo Fuente Hemingway Short Story/Signature

- Padron (64 Anniversay and X000 Maduros)

- Headley Grange

- Four Kicks

- Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure No. 2

- Drew Estate Liga Privada T52

- My Father No. 3

- Bolivar Belicosos Finos

- Juan Lopez Seleccion No. 2

- H. Upmann Magnum 50

- Montecristo No. 3

- Oliva Master Blends 3 torpedo

I do love them Four Kicks! only a couple of Corona Gorda's left in my humi, might bring one out this evening now!

I got the Crowned Heads sampler recently, but I also have a Corona Gorda in my humi that I might need to bring out tonight, as well. I still haven't tried the JD Howard Reserve, though...

I had one of them last summer and it was a beautiful smoke, these guys are definitely knocking out some of the best NC's IMO.

So your from Florida eh? So close and yet so far from the source. Welcome from the west coast of Canada. I have not tried all your favorites but those I have are clearly superior cigars thus you have excellent taste since I agree :}

Check out the November trip they have planned http://www.friendsofhabanos.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=117364

It would seem a quick flight to Cancun and ....

We have a decent crew here in Orlando. We meet up for a herf at Coronas every few months. Most of the guys post on another forum, but I'll try and remember to post something up in the US forum when we do another public one for anyone who wants to join in.

Some of us are more dedicated to habanos, but we're cool with all the guys at CCC so they don't care what we smoke as we all usually pick up some singles when we are there anyways... And we usually give some of the staff some goodies. :)

Great intro. Welcome to the Dark Side. Your life will never be the same. If you're like me, you will eventually give up the NC's and go CC's full time. That's about the time your CC (credit card) balance will inflate like the Goodyear Blimp.

That's great that the staff are cool with you all, but I wonder, would most places like that care anyway if you were smoking a Cuban or if they could even tell? In any case, sounds great!

As a rule it is seriously frowned upon as it obviously isn't a legal practice. Many wouldn't know the difference unless you were talking with everyone in the bar and showing off, and sometimes not even then. It can still potentially get them into trouble, but if you aren't obnoxious with it then it isn't a major concern. I've seen guys in B&Ms trying to be show offs and get treated rather curtly. I doubt this would apply to the majority on this forum, but we are careful at clarifying to guys from others. ;)
